Stifling defense sends Sycamores past Chicago State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State went on a 21-0 run across the second and third quarters Tuesday evening, spearheading the Sycamores to a wire-to-wire 68-43 win over Chicago State inside Hulman Center.

Del'Janae Williams led all scorers with 14 points, while Chelsea Cain had 12 and Anna McKendree had 11. Cain had four assists and three rebounds, while McKendree led the Sycamores with six boards and Williams added five rebounds.

After a slow start, Indiana State broke open what was a three-point game with its 21-0 run and never looked back. The Sycamore defense stymied Chicago State into 28 turnovers and a 32.1 percent mark from the field. Indiana State outscored Chicago State 38-20 across the middle quarters to help snap a two-game skid.

First Half
Williams opened the scoring for the Sycamores by driving to the basket for a layup, and Ella Sawyer added a layup in transition to make it 7-2 in the early stages of the first quarter. Chicago State got within two shortly after the media timeout, but Cain kept Indiana State in front with a second-chance layup. Williams added another layup late in the quarter, as the Sycamores led 14-10 after the opening 10 minutes.

Williams continued her strong start into the second quarter with a layup to open the scoring, and Hattie Westerfeld added another layup to push the Sycamore lead to 18-10. Back-to-back baskets for Chicago State cut the lead to three, but the Sycamores took control from there to close the half. Natalia Lalic kickstarted a 13-0 run to close the half with a jumper, and McKendree knocked down a 3-pointer in transition to add on to the lead. Lalic and McKendree each added another basket during the run, while Florence Tshimanga had four points off the bench in the last three-plus minutes of the half. Indiana State held Chicago State scoreless for the final 6:37 of the half, taking a 31-15 lead into the locker room.

Second Half
Cain was the hot hand for the Sycamores to start the third quarter, scoring six of the first eight points. Indiana State's run to close the first half extended into the third quarter, as Chicago State finally stopped the run at 21-0 with a 3-pointer two minutes in. Williams countered that with a 3-pointer in transition, and Bella Finnegan added another triple to make it 46-23. Lalic extended the lead with a layup, though Chicago State scored each of the last four points to get within 52-30 after three quarters.

Cain and Williams opened the fourth quarter with baskets to push the Sycamore lead to 58-32, and Tshimanga gave Indiana State its largest lead of the contest at 61-34 with a free throw. Alona Blackwell, Sommer Pitzer and Mya Glanton got in on the scoring act late in the quarter by combining for the last seven points as the Trees cruised to a 68-43 win.
