WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –
Del'Janae Williams had a game-high 18 points Sunday afternoon, but a lengthy Purdue run across the last two quarters gave the Boilermakers a 77-54 win over Indiana State inside Mackey Arena.
Natalia Lalic added eight points off the bench, while
Adrian Folks had six.
Anna McKendree had five points, six rebounds, three assists and five steals for the Sycamores.
Indiana State gave Purdue fits throughout the first half and took the lead late in the first quarter. The Sycamores led by as many as four early in the second, but a Boilermaker run gave Purdue a lead it never relinquished. A 31-7 Purdue run spanning all of the third and part of the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.
First Half
Purdue scored the first five points and led for the opening stages of the first quarter. A pair of
Chelsea Cain baskets on consecutive possessions made it a 9-8 game and
Natalia Lalic later gave the Sycamores the lead with a contested layup. In what became a back-and-forth quarter,
Bella Finnegan hit a 3-pointer from the corner to put Indiana State up 21-18 inside the final minute. The Sycamores took a slim 21-20 lead into the second.
Del'Janae Williams got things going for the Sycamores in the second quarter with a 3-pointer from the wing, and
Florence Tshimanga added a layup to put ISU ahead by four, 26-22. Williams added a layup midway through the quarter to make it 28-25 in favor of the Blue and White, but Purdue went on a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead. Another 3-pointer by Williams, this one in the final minute, made it a 35-31 deficit at the intermission.
Second Half
Purdue opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run and never looked back. Lalic hit a 3-pointer in transition to cut the deficit to 45-34, but the Boilermakers answered with a 3-pointer of their own. Points were hard to come by for Indiana State in the third quarter, as the Sycamores made just three shots. Purdue took advantage of Indiana State's tough shooting in the quarter and built a 56-38 lead after three.
Another 10-0 run, this one to start the fourth quarter, gave Purdue a 66-38 lead. Williams hit a 3-pointer for the Sycamores, but Purdue rattled off a 7-0 run to give the Boilermakers their largest lead at 73-41. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Williams and Lalic cut into the deficit, and Williams added another 3-pointer to make it 75-52 late in the quarter.
Adrian Folks and Williams each hit a pair of free throws in the final minutes, but by that point Purdue had wrapped up the win, defeating the Sycamores 77-54.
