Balanced attack falls short for Sycamores in season finale

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Indiana State closed out its 2022 season Tuesday night, as the Sycamores fell to Evansville in a tightly-contested four-set match (24-26, 25-8, 25-23, 25-23) inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.

Mallory Keller Storm Suhre led the attack for the Sycamores with 11 kills each, while Taylor Shelton added eight kills in her final match for the Blue and White. Emma Kaelin notched a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs, leading the Trees in both statistical categories, and Jamie Brown recorded a match-high five blocks.

Indiana State used a six-point run to take a 13-10 lead in the opening set, with Keller notching a pair of kills during the run. Shelton added a service ace, one of two on the night for her, to make it 17-15 in favor of the Trees. Evansville went on a run late in the set and had a set point but a three-point run for the Sycamores, capped by a block assist by Suhre and Keller, gave Indiana State a 26-24 win in the set.

Evansville responded in the second, as the Sycamores found themselves in a hole they couldn't recover from in the set. The Purple Aces opened up an 11-1 lead and never looked back, taking the second set 25-8 to even the match at one set apiece.

A pair of kills by Suhre early in the third set helped Indiana State jump out to a 7-5 lead, and the Sycamores maintained their lead following a block assist by Keller and Brown. Evansville went on a 9-1 run to take a 19-12 lead, but the Sycamores rallied with a run of their own. Kills by Keller, Shelton and Suhre, along with multiple Evansville errors, propelled the Trees on a 10-1 run to put Indiana State back in front, 22-20. Suhre added another kill late in the set, but Evansville rallied to take the last four points and win the third 25-23.

Indiana State found itself in a hole early in the fourth, as Evansville opened the set on a 9-2 run. The Sycamores clawed their way back into the set, with Keller leading the charge on a run to cut the deficit down to 16-14. Kaelin added a kill and an ace as part of a 5-1 run for the Sycamores, tying the set at 22-22 in the process. Despite the fight shown by the Sycamores in the fourth, Evansville held on to take the set 25-23, clinching the win in the process.
