Sycamores edged by Missouri State in Saturday matinee

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State gave preseason Valley favorite Missouri State all it could handle Saturday afternoon, but the Lady Bears eked out a 62-58 over the shorthanded Sycamores inside the Hulman Center.

Natalia Lalic led the Sycamores with 15 points and also had a game-high four assists. Del'Janae Williams and Caitlin Anderson had 12 points apiece, while Mya Glanton had 11 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Indiana State trailed by as many as 14, but outscored Missouri State 47-38 over the final three quarters. The Sycamores tied the game at 52-all after Lalic hit a 3-pointer with just over two minutes left, but Missouri State scored on each of its next three possessions to squeak past the Sycamores.

First Half
The first few minutes saw both teams exchanging baskets, as Lalic, Anderson and Marie Hunter all scored within the Sycamores' first six offensive possessions. Missouri State's defense tightened up after that and the Lady Bears used a 10-0 run to break open a tie game. Glanton and Williams were able to cut into the deficit with four straight points, but the visitors kept getting contributions from their entire lineup and took a 24-11 lead after the first quarter.

Missouri State took its largest lead of the game early in the second quarter after a Paige Rocca 3-pointer, but the Sycamores started to claw their way back into the game after the triple. Glanton, Williams and Lalic each scored as part of a 7-0 Indiana State run that cut the Sycamore deficit in half and forced MSU into a timeout midway through the quarter. Missouri State built its lead back up to double-digits, but a pair of Williams free throws and a late layup by Glanton sent the Sycamores to the halftime break down by six, 34-28.

Second Half
Glanton opened the second half with a jumper on Indiana State's first possession, as the teams traded baskets throughout the early stages of the third quarter. The Sycamores were able to cut the deficit to four following a jumper by Anderson, but went scoreless for the final 4:22. Missouri State was only able to score one basket and a pair of free throws during the Indiana State scoring drought, though, and took a 46-38 lead into the fourth.

ISU opened the scoring in the fourth on a Williams pull-up jumper, as the early stages of the quarter saw the Sycamores and Lady Bears continue to trade baskets. Indiana State made a late 8-0 run over a 90-second span to even the score at 52-apiece following a Lalic 3-pointer from the wing off an out-of-bounds play. Lalic had five points during the run, with Anderson and Glanton also contributing to the scoring during that swing. Missouri State countered with back-to-back baskets from Brice Calip and Abigayle Jackson, and knocked down six straight free throws in the final minute to escape the Hulman Center with a 62-58 win.
