Sycamores in the NFL - Week 1

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – All three of Indiana State's players currently in the National Football League lined up on the active NFL rosters for opening weekend of the 2021 season.

Robert Tonyan Jr. and Dominique Dafney both were active on the Green Bay Packers roster for their afternoon game against the New Orleans Saints, while Jonas Griffith took the field with the Denver Broncos at the New York Giants.

Tonyan hauled in two receptions for eight yards in the Packers' 38-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints in a neutral site game held in Jacksonville, Fla. due to the effects of Hurricane Ida. He was targeted twice in the first half, before making his first catch on Green Bay's opening drive of the third quarter. He added a late three-yard reception in the fourth quarter to cap his afternoon.

Dafney was among the active players on the Packers roster, but did not record a statistic in the game. He lined up primarily on special teams for Green Bay on opening week.

Griffith made his NFL debut for the Denver Broncos after a late preseason trade to the roster from the San Francisco 49ers. The Broncos topped the Giants 27-13 at MetLife Stadium with Griffith primarily seeing time on the special teams unit in the win.

The trio of Sycamores are expected to be back in action next week. Tonyan Jr., Dafney, and the Packers will host the Detroit Lions in a Monday night game at Lambeau Field with kickoff on ESPN and ESPN2 set for 8:15 p.m. ET. Griffith and the Broncos make the trip to Jacksonville, Fla. for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff against the Jacksonville Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field. The game is expected to be carried on CBS.
