TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – For the first time since the late 1980s, three Indiana State football alums are on active NFL rosters heading into the start of the 2021 season. Robert Tonyan Jr. (Green Bay Packers), Dominique Dafney (Green Bay Packers), and Jonas Griffith (Denver Broncos) were all named to the 53-man rosters by their respective teams as fall training camp ended.
The only time Indiana State has had more active players on an NFL roster came back in the late 1980s when Mike Simmonds (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Wayne Davis (San Diego Chargers/Buffalo Bills), Vencie Glenn (New England Patriots), and Tunch Ilkin (Pittsburgh Steelers) were in the league together.
Tonyan is heading into his fourth season with the Packers. The veteran is coming off one of the best seasons by a tight end in Green Bay history after tying for the single-season franchise record for the most touchdown receptions by a tight end (11), while tying for the NFL lead at the position. He also posted career-highs in receptions (52) and receiving yards (586).
Dafney worked his way into a role late with the Packers at the conclusion of his rookie season. The West Des Moines, Iowa native was elevated from the practice squad on Week 13 of the season and was signed to the 53-man active roster in mid-December. He appeared in the final five games of the season and both postseason contests. Highlighting his year included catches in back-to-back weeks in the regular season, including a 13-yard touchdown catch against the Chicago Bears in Week 17.
Griffith spent a majority of the training camp with the San Francisco 49ers, before a late trade sent the six-time All-American to the Denver Broncos roster earlier this week. The 6-4 linebacker was third on the 49ers over the preseason with nine tackles, while adding two special teams tackles. Over his career at Indiana State, he recorded 382 career tackles, 50 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and two interceptions.
All three Sycamores are expected to be on the sidelines when the NFL kicks off the 2021 season over the September 9-13 weekend.
