Sycamore Women Place Third, Men Fourth at MVC Outdoor Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Indiana State track and field teams concluded their weekend of competition at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships on Sunday with the women taking third as a team and the men finishing fourth.

The Sycamore women placed third with 93 points, falling only to Illinois State (232) and Southern Illinois (143) while the men placed fourth with 111.33, falling to Northern Iowa (167.50), Illinois State (154.33) and Drake (135).

During the opening event of the day, Ryann Porter opened in a big way for the Sycamore women. The freshman used her last jump of the triple jump competition to set a new career-best in the event, recording the second-best leap in school history of 12.91m (42-04.25) to claim her first MVC title. Her mark is now 20th in the NCAA East and 50th in the NCAA. Brittney Walker also scored for the Trees, placing eighth at 11.65m (38-02.75).

On the men's side, JaVaughn Moore captured a pair of conference titles in the sprints. The Marietta, Ga., native opened his day with a third-place finish in the 4X100-meter relay alongside teammates Matthew Lewis-Banks, Noah Malone and Jhivon Wilson with a time of 40.58. He followed that performance by winning the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 10.46, nearly a tenth of a second faster than second-place. Malone and Blayne Harrington also scored in the event, taking fourth at 10.66 and eighth at 10.85, respectively.

Moore's day wasn't over, however, as the outdoor sophomore earned his second title of the day after running a personal-best and the seventh-best 200-meter dash time in school history of 21.03. Malone also made another appearance alongside Moore in the scoring category, placing fourth at 21.57.

In addition to Moore, Lewis-Banks secured his first outdoor championship as a member of the Blue & White. The outdoor sophomore tied a personal-best time of 13.98, the tenth-fastest time in ISU history, to claim victory in the men's 110-meter hurdles on Sunday. His teammate, Daryl Black, took fifth with a personal-best time of 14.37.

Earning All-MVC honors in the field for the Trees was Dearis Herron in the men's triple jump. Herron leaped to a second-place finish behind a season-best jump of 14.77m (48-05.50), securing his seventh All-Valley honor of his career.

Also earning silver for the men was the 4X400-meter relay team composed of Ben Shepard, Mitchell Cline, Will Smith and Tahj Johnson. The squad crossed the line in second-place, clocking a time of 3:14.28 for All-Valley honors. Johnson and Cline each also brought home points in the men's 400-meter dash, taking sixth and seventh with times of 48.56 and 49.09, respectively.

For the women, Jocelyn Quiles earned her second All-MVC honor of the weekend during the final individual oval event in the women's competition. Quiles earned silver in the women's 5K after having the fastest final 400-meters of the race, ending with a time of 17:12.23.

In addition to the All-MVC honorees for the women, 10 additional women brought home points. Both relay teams managed to score, with the 4X400-meter relay of Iyanla Hunter, Sierra Long, Rebecca Odusola and Riley Tuerff placed fifth with a time of 3:46.85. The 4X100-meter team of Hunter, Daija Springer, Reynei Wallace and Jayla Williams placed sixth at 47.12.

Tuerff had a productive day on the track outside of the relays, placing fifth in the 400-meter hurdles behind a personal-best time of 1:01.98, which is also the 10th-best time in Sycamore history. Long also brought home points, using a time of 1:04.58 for seventh overall.

In addition to the relays, Odusola took a fifth-place finish in the women's 800-meter run after posting close to a season-best time of 2:11.94. Hunter took sixth in the women's 400-meter dash after clocking a time of 56.15.

A duo of Sycamores scored in the women's 100-meter hurdles, led by freshman Zoe Sullivan who placed fifth with a time of 14.17. She was joined by Porter who placed eighth with a time of 14.40 after already claiming her triple jump title.

Wallace earned points in two events for the women, placing seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.15 and eighth in the 100-meter dash after racing across the line at 12.19.

Additional scoring efforts on the men's side featured a personal-best performance from Wyatt Wyman in the men's 800-meter run. Wyman used a career-day to place fourth in the event with the eighth-best time in Indiana State history of 1:50.42.

In the men's 400-meter hurdles, freshman Quincy Armstrong brought home two points for ISU after placing seventh with a time of 54.46. Cale Kilian was the final scorer on the track for the men, taking eighth-place in the 1500-meter run at 3:56.15.

The lone points in the field, outside of Herron in the triple jump, for Indiana State came from freshman Wyatt Puff in the discus throw. Puff placed sixth in the event with a toss of 50.67m (166-03).

The 2021 season will continue on for a contingent of Sycamores who qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., from May 27-29. Athletes who qualify for the East Region must rank in the top-48 in their respective individual events.
