CARBONDALE, Ill. – A quarter of All-Missouri Valley Conference performers, highlighted by an MVC title in the men's high jump, led the way for Indiana State at day two of the MVC Championships.
After day two, the Sycamore women find themselves in third as a team with 46 points, trailing only Illinois State (114) and Southern Illinois (70). The ISU men sit in sixth with 28.33 points, trailing Northern Iowa (103.5), Illinois State (74.33), Drake (45), Southern Illinois (33.5) and Bradley (32).
The Sycamores high jumpers completed the indoor-outdoor sweep of event in the Missouri Valley Conference on Saturday afternoon when freshman
Kevin Krutsch claimed the first MVC title of the weekend for Indiana State. The freshman earned the victory with a clearance of 2.07m (6-09.50) while teammate
Nathan Kiger placed fourth to score with a clearance of 1.98m (6-06.00).
On the women's side, Indiana State had a strong day of performances.
Claire Pittman earned the top finish of the day, placing second in the women's long jump for All-MVC honors behind a personal-best leap 5.74m (18-10.00).
Ryann Porter placed sixth in the event, ending with a mark of 5.56m (18-03.00).
During the last track event of the day for the women,
Jocelyn Quiles topped her personal-best in the 3000-meter steeplechase for All-MVC honors and a third-place finish. The senior ended with the second-best time in school history of 10:20.10, the 43rd-best mark in the East Region.
Also earning All-Valley honors for the Sycamore women was
Kelsey Bowlds. Using a season-best clearance of 1.71m (5-07.50), the outdoor freshman took third overall in the competition while teammate
Janea Bell placed sixth with a personal-best clearance of 1.68m (5-06.25).
The first event of the day to conclude, the women's heptathlon, featured a personal-best performance from
Alexis Grider. Picking up a pair of third-place finishes in the long jump and 800-meter run, the Ft. Wayne, Ind., native earned a career-best 4160 points to finish fourth for Indiana State. On the men's side of the mulit events, Mitch Conard took sixth overall with a score 6019.
In the throws for the Blue & White, outdoor freshmen
Jayla Bynum and
Brittnee James recorded significant personal-bests to earn important points for the women. Bynum led the way, placing sixth with a toss of 14.66m (48-01.25) while James took eighth with a final throw of 14.27m (46-10.00).
Wyatt Puff also had a stellar day in the throwing events for the Trees. In the men's shot put, the freshman unleashed the seventh-best toss in school history of 17.81m (58-05.25) for seventh in the competition. The Valley boasts itself as one of the top throwing conferences in the nation, and Puff's mark is now 42nd in the East.
Scoring for the men in the long jump was the duo of
Dearis Herron and
Jamal Safo. Herron placed fifth in the event after recording a jump of 6.96m (22-10.00) Safo placed sixth right behind Herron with a leap of 6.94m (22-09.24).
Four Sycamores will represent the Blue & White in the 100-meter dash tomorrow afternoon. On the men's side,
JaVaughn Moore (10.60),
Noah Malone (10.72) and
Blayne Harrington (10.82) all earned automatic qualifying slots while
Reynei Wallace clocked a time of 12.07 to qualify on the women's side.
In the men's 400-meter dash, a pair of Sycamores were able to punch their ticket to finals.
Tahj Johnson clocked the third-best preliminary time of 48.46 while
Mitchell Cline automatically qualified in his heat with a time of 49.03.
Iyanla Hunter was the lone qualifier on the women's side, earning a time qualifier with a time of 56.16.
During the 400-meter hurdles,
Sierra Long and
Riley Tuerff qualified for finals on the women's side. During prelims, Tuerff recorded a time of 1:03.78 while Long ended at 1:04.94 to qualify.
Quincy Armstrong will represent the men after qualifying with a time of 54.86.
There will be one Sycamore racing in both the men's and women's 800-meter run. On the men's side,
Wyatt Wyman earned the final time qualifier slot with a time of 1:51.38 while
Rebecca Odusola will represent the women after earning a prelim time of 2:13.64.
Day three of the MVC Championships for Sycamore track and field resumes tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m. ET with the women's triple jump and discus throw.
