CARBONDALE, Ill. – A pair of fourth-place finishes, led by a school record performance from
Jayla Bynum in the javelin throw, highlighted day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships for Indiana State track and field.
After one day of competition, the Indiana State women find themselves in fourth-place with 11 points, trailing Illinois State (43), Southern Illinois (37) and Drake (27). The men sit in ninth with .33 points.
Bynum, an outdoor freshman, set the school record in the women's javelin throw on Friday afternoon. During her third throw of the competition, Bynum unleashed a toss of 45.05m (147-09) to secure a fourth-place finish. Her heave is over a two-foot improvement over the previous record of 44.27m (145-03) that had stood since 2010.
Also securing five points for the Sycamore women was
Selene Weaver in the pole vault. The freshman placed fourth in the event with a clearance of 3.55m (11-07.75) while teammates
Maddie Welsh and
Taylor Pierce also scored, tying for eighth at 3.25m (10-08.00).
On the men's side, freshman
Gavin Holz was the lone day one scorer. Holz ended in a tie for eighth with Luke Nelson of Illinois State and Ian Alberts of Evansville in the pole vault after clearing a height of 4.42m (14-06.00).
In the multi-events, a trio of Trees find themselves within scoring range. Through five events scored in the men's decathlon, Mitch Conard sits in fifth with 3516 points. For the women,
Alexis Grider is in fifth in the hepathlon with 2503 points while
Kamille Gaskin-Griffith is 10th with 2214 points.
Four Sycamores also qualified for finals throughout Friday's competition. Cale Killian will be the representative for the Blue & White in the men's 1500-meter run after earning an automatic qualifier spot with a third-place finish in heat three with a time of 3:53.39 during prelims. Finals for the men's 1500-meter run will occur at 2:20 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 16.
The Indiana State men and women will both have athletes in the 200-meter dash finals.
Reynei Wallace used the best race of her ISU career in the women's 200-meter dash preliminary, clocking a personal-best time of 24.41 to place second in her heat and earn an automatic qualifier into finals on Sunday at 3:55 p.m. ET.
JaVaughn Moore and
Noah Malone will race in the men's 200-meter dash final on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. Placing second in heat three of prelims, Moore earned an automatic qualifier with a time of 21.21 while Malone advanced with a time qualifier spot behind a time of 21.63.
Day two of the MVC Championships will begin at 11 a.m. ET with the remaining events in the decathlon.
