Sycamore Men, Women Defeat Eastern Illinois on Saturday Afternoon

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State men's and women's track and field teams were both victorious over Eastern Illinois on a beautiful Saturday at the Gibson Track & Field Complex.
 
Indiana State's men ended with a 112-58 advantage over the Panthers while the women claimed the team victory with a 106-65 win.
 
The first event on the track featured an impressive performance from the men's 4X100-meter relay squad. The team, composed of Jarel Shaw, JaVaughn Moore, Jhivon Wilson and Noah Malone extended their Missouri Valley Conference-leading to 40.76, the 15th-best time in the NCAA East Region and 39th in the nation.
 
Malone continued his dominance in the sprinting events on Saturday, once again running faster than the Para World Record in the 200-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 21.07 which also ties the ninth-best time in Sycamore history. He is now back atop the standings in the conference. Prior to his 200-meter dash performance, he won the 100-meter dash by running faster than the Americas and U.S. Para Records with a wind-aided time of 10.55, improving his already Valley-leading time. His 200-meter dash time is currently 21st in the East Region and 42nd nationally while his 100-meter dash time sits at 33rd in the East Region.
 
Moore placed second in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, clocking a time of 10.56 in the 100 and 21.29 in the 200-meter dash. His time in the 100-meter dash is second in the Valley and 33rd in the East while his 200-meter dash time sits at third in the MVC and 44th in the NCAA East Region.
 
During the first distance event of the day, Ethan Breen brought home gold for the Blue & White in the 1500-meter run. Breen used a strong kick on the home stretch of the competition to pull away for a win over Trevor Murphy of Eastern Illinois with a time of 3:57.53.
 
Breen battled back later in the afternoon to win the men's 3000-meter run with a time of 8:49.53, defeating second place by over five seconds.
 
Tahj Johnson continued to build off of his strong indoor season, placing first in the men's 400-meter dash on Saturday with the third-best MVC time of 49.18. Fellow Sycamore Mitchell Cline took silver at 49.94.
 
Adding hurdles into the already competitive 400-meter dash, Caine Wilson took first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.19 while teammate Garrett Wagner placed second at 59.32.
 
Freshman Wyatt Puff had his best day in a Sycamore uniform in the shot put, letting loose a personal-best toss of 17.27m (56-08.00) en route to the victory. He is now fourth in a deep field in the Valley and 32nd in the East Region. Brett Norton took second right behind Puff, registering a final toss of 16.39m (53-09.25).
 
Puff managed to toss his way to a second victory against Eastern Illinois, claiming the title in the men's discus throw behind a toss of 50.29m (165-00), the third-best mark in the Missouri Valley Conference at the time of publication. Fellow freshman Noah Bolt placed third in the event behind a throw of 47.63m (156-03).
 
Indiana State's men got their first sweep of the day in the men's high jump, getting a victory from reigning MVC indoor champion Nick Schultz with a clearance of 2.06m (6-09.00). His teammates Nathan Kiger and Kevin Krutsch each tied for second with a jump of 2.03m (6-08.00).
 
Frankie Young III also managed to pick up a victory in the field for the men with another strong performance in the long jump. Young claimed first overall with a final jump of 7.12m (23-04.50) and his mark of 7.21m (23-08.00) from Ole Miss is first in the Valley. His teammate, Dearis Herron took second with a jump of 7.00m (22-11.75), the third-best jump in the MVC.
 
The Sycamores earned the top spot in the men's triple jump following the long jump, with Emmanuel Odubanjo recording the second-best jump in the MVC of 14.69m (48-02.50) to win the event. After taking second in the long jump, Herron placed third in the triple with a leap of 14.04m (46-00.75).
 
The Blue & White ended the men's portion of the meet with a one-two finish in the pole vault. Gavin Holz ended atop the results with a clearance of 4.33m (14-02.50) while Callan Whitehouse took silver at 3.88m (12-08.75).
 
On the track for the Sycamore women, Iyanla Hunter picked up the first win for the Trees. Hunter sprinted to a victory in the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 56.32, the fourth-best MVC time, en route to the win while Sierra Long placed second at 58.93.
 
Reynei Wallace followed Hunter's performance with a victory of her own, clocking a time of 12.06 to win the women's 100-meter dash. She now holds the fourth-best time in the Missouri Valley Conference.
 
Also earning a win for the Blue & White was Rebecca Odusola in the women's 800-meter run, crossing the line at 2:17.40, six seconds in front of EIU's Chloe Irish who took second place.
 
The first sweep on the track for the ISU women came from the 400-meter hurdlers, with Riley Tuerff leading charge at 1:04.90 while Eva Grace Quinlan and Ayana Parchman placing second and third at 1:07.19 and 1:07.88, respectively.
 
Jocelyn Quiles claimed the women's 3000-meter run title, finishing with a strong time of 9:59.27, the seventh-best time in Indiana State history. Morgan Dyer took silver at 10:36.11 while Erica Barker rounded-out the top-three for ISU with a time of 11:03.57.
 
In the first field event of the day, Jayla Bynum entered the Sycamore record book. The outdoor freshman won the javelin throw with the seventh-best mark in ISU history of 39.13m (128-04) and was followed by teammates Kamille Gaskin-Griffith and Cloe Clark in second and third at 33.93m (111-04) and 33.82m (110-11), respectively. Their male counterpart, Mitch Conard was victorious in the men's javelin at 36.36m (119-03).
 
Bynum's day didn't end in the javelin, however, as she took the top spot in the women's shot put with a mark of 13.97m (45-10.00) for her second victory of the day. Lauren England ended in second for the Sycamores at 13.85m (45-05.25) while Brittnee James completed the placed third at 12.61m (41-04.50).
 
The women got their second-sweep of the day in the women's long jump, led by Kaitlyn Davis who took gold in the event with a 5.55m (18-02.50). Dominique Wood placed second behind a jump of 5.42m (17-09.50) while Ryann Porter ended in the third position with a mark of 5.40m (17-08.75).
 
It was a straight sweep in the horizontal jumps as a whole, with the women claiming the top three positions in the triple jump. Ryann Porter led the way with the second-best jump in the Valley of 11.78m (38-07.75) while Dominique Wood took second at 10.83m (35-06.50). Brittney Walker completed the sweep in third with a jump of 10.69m (35-01.00).
 
Victories continued to pour in on the women's side of the field, with Janea Bell taking the first spot in the women's high jump after a clearance of 1.65m (5-05.00), the fourth-best jump in the MVC. Marisa Marshall took third overall at 1.55m (5-01.00).
 
Freshman Hannah Redlin earned her first collegiate victory on Saturday, taking gold in the women's discus throw. Redlin finished with a toss of 47.49m (155-10) to win the event while Elaina Walls placed third overall with a throw of 44.01m (144-05).
 
The final field event of the day ended in yet another ISU sweep with Selene Weaver winning the pole vault with a clearance of 3.78m (12-04.75). Freshmen Maddie Welsh and Landis Brandon took second and third at 3.33m (10-11.00) and 3.18m (10-05.25), respectively.
 
Indiana State will be back in action next Friday and Saturday (Apr. 9-10) when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Crimson Tide Invitational.
