TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State softball team split a doubleheader against Southern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Price Field.
Lexi Benko shut out the Salukis as the Sycamores took game one by a score of 2-0 before falling 11-1 in the nightcap.
Indiana State moved to 17-22 on the season and 10-10 in MVC play while Southern Illinois sits at 31-11 and 13-7 in Valley action.
Game One – Indiana State 2, Southern Illinois 0
Indiana State struck first in the bottom of the first when
Bella Peterson doubled to left center field and Amanada Guercio doubled to right center field to bring Peterson in.
Lexie Siwek led off the bottom of the second with a single and
Annie Tokarek doubled to left center to bring in Siwek and give the Sycamores a 2-0 lead.
Lexi Benko and
Arielle Blankenship combined for the shutout holding down the circle. Benko threw 5.2 innings earning her fourth win on the year, only giving up a trio of hits and struck out four Salukis. Blankenship retired every Southern Illinois batter she faced securing her first save on the year.

Game Two – Southern Illinois 11, Indiana State 1
Southern Illinois jumped out in front first with a single to right field to plate a pair of runs to take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
Indiana State answered in the bottom half of the second inning when
Amanda Guercio doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning and
Annie Tokarek's groundout plated
Kristen Kelly, the pinch runner to cut the SIU lead in half.
The Saluki bats came alive as they answered with nine runs over four innings powering over Indiana State to secure the 11-1 win.
