TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --Â Indiana State's historic women's soccer season came to an end on Wednesday evening following a double-overtime heartbreaker against Valparaiso in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semi-finals.
Â
Valparaiso (5-3-5, 3-2-3 MVC) claimed the tournament victory after Lindsey Dusatko put away a goal in the 108th minute in double-overtime off of a second touch, giving the Brown and Gold a 1-0 win. The Sycamores (6-4, 6-2 MVC) end their season with the most conference wins in school history and completed the biggest program turnaround in MVC play after winning just one match during the 2019 campaign.
Â
All six of the Blue & White's victories in the spring ended in shutouts, giving them the third-most shutouts in ISU history. Their three road victories during the season also go down as the third-best season in Sycamore history.
Â
Despite the low-scoring affair, there was no shortage of offense at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Sycamores held a 23-13 shot advantage over Valpo, five of which were on goal.
CeCe Wahlberg led the way with seven shots and one on goal while
Isabella Hunter and
Anna Holcombe each registered three shot attempts as well.
Â
In addition to holding an advantage in shots, the Sycamores also held a commanding 9-3 edge in corner kicks over the opposition. Defensively, Indiana State managed to keep the Brown and Gold without a corner kick throughout the second half and both overtime periods.
Â
Maddie Alexander was strong in the goal once again for the Trees, tallying four saves throughout the match, all in the second half, including a crucial one-on-one stop in the 88th minute to help force overtime. Alexander's freshman campaign already has her name well-established in the ISU record book as her six shutouts this season end as the second-best outing by an ISU goalkeeper in program history. The only athlete ahead of Alexander is Erin Mitchell who ended with seven shutouts during the 2012 season.
Â
Despite the difficult ending to the season, Sycamore women's soccer used the spring 2021 season to beat UNI for the first time since 2014, defeat Missouri State in Springfield for the first time since 2013, take down Illinois State in Normal for the first time in program history and defeat Evansville for the first time since 2013.
