Sycamores Blank Bulldogs for First Victory of 2021

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Freshman Katie Yankey's first career goal and the first shutout of freshman Maddie Alexander's career led the Indiana State (1-1-0; 1-0-0 MVC) soccer team to a 1-0 over Drake (0-1-0; 0-1-0 MVC) Sunday afternoon at ISU Memorial Stadium.
 
KEY STATS
- Freshman Katie Yankey netted her first career goal and the first goal of the season for Indiana State with an unassisted 73rd minute strike.
- Freshman keeper Maddie Alexander registered her first career clean sheet, making six saves on 11 total Drake shots.
- Both the Sycamores and Bulldogs registered three corner kicks.
- After finishing with just two shots in the season opener, Indiana State tallied 11 in Sunday's victory.
 
KEY MOMENTS
- Freshman Katie Yankey broke the scoreless battle with a goal in traffic in the 73rd minute. After an initial shot from sophomore Serra Hanrahan, Yankey was able to find the back of the net off the rebound.
- Indiana State controlled much of the game's pace, as freshman Carlie Jensen broke free and ripped a shot in the 31st minute, but Drake's Kelsie Stone was up to the task.
- Sophomore Isabella Hunter sent a shot off the crossbar in the 66th minute.
- Drake's best scoring opportunity came in the 76th minute off a free kick and moments later on a scrum in front of the net off a corner. Maddie Alexander turned aside both of the Bulldogs' attempts for the equalizer.
 
UP NEXT
Indiana State returns to the friendly confines of ISU Memorial Stadium with a Friday matinee March 5, taking on Southern Illinois with the first whistle scheduled for 1 p.m.
