TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Six Sycamores scored in double-figures as Indiana State basketball rolled to a 107-51 victory over Midway Wednesday night at Hulman Center.
Zach Hobbs led the charge with a career-high 23 points and seven rebounds while
Cooper Neese added 20 points for the Trees.
Shorthanded with starters
Xavier Bledson,
Cameron Henry and
Simon Wilbar out due to COVID-19 protocols and freshman
Quimari Peterson dealing with non-COVID illness, the Sycamores got more than enough production from their nine available players.
The 107-point mark is the first time ISU has surpassed the century mark since 1999 with a 102-91 double-overtime win over Eastern Illinois and the first time ISU has done so in regulation since scoring 113 in a win over Millikin in 1984.
After a slow start, the Sycamores (7-6, 0-1 MVC) jumped out to a 14-6 lead at the under-16 media timeout and never looked back. Three Sycamores scored in double-digits in the first half led by Hobbs' 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Micah Thomas and
Cooper Neese chipped in 11 each as ISU took a 53-25 lead into the locker room.
It was all Indiana State out of the break as the Trees reeled off an 11-0 run sparked by second-chance opportunities to extend their lead to 64-25. Eight of the nine Sycamores that saw the floor scored as both
Cameron Crawford (14) and
Nick Hittle (11) each scored career highs in the win.
ISU was strong with the ball, assisting on 20 of the team's 37 made baskets while turning the ball over just six times. ISU shot 55.2 percent (37-67) from the floor and 51.2 percent (16-31) from behind the arc. The Sycamores also capitalized at the charity stripe, hitting 17 of 19 free throws.
Julian Larry led ISU on the glass with 10 rebounds to go with his nine points while Hobbs and Crawford grabbed seven rebounds apiece. As a team, ISU outrebounded the Eagles, 49-27.
Midway, who was a late addition to the schedule after ISU's game with Coppin State was canceled due to COVID-19, was led by Raekwon Evans who tallied a team-high 21 points on 10-for-25 shooting.
ISU finished with a 22-4 advantage in second-chance points while the bench outscored Midway 48-16.
The Sycamores are set to return to action on Jan. 2 to open Missouri Valley Conference action at home against Bradley. Tip with the Braves is set for 1 p.m. at Hulman Center. Fans wishing to purchase tickets can do so by clicking
