STATESBORO, Ga. – Indiana State was unable to hold off a late Jacksonville State run on Friday afternoon as the Sycamores fell to the Gamecocks on the first day of the GATA Turkey Throwdown at Hanner Fieldhouse, 67-57.
The Sycamores (1-4) held a five-point lead nearing the midway point in the fourth quarter as
Tonysha Curry drove into the paint for the layup. The basket put Indiana State up 54-49 for their largest lead of the quarter, before the Gamecocks (3-2) scored five in a row with Bre'Anna Rhodes scoring the first three points to tie the game up at 54-54 with 5:25 remaining.
The five-point swing led to an 18-3 stretch that spanned the final 6:10 as the Gamecocks closed out the first day win.
Marie Hunter led the Sycamores with a season-high 19 points as the junior guard went 7-of-16 from the floor while playing all 40:00 minutes in the contest.
Adrian Folks added 12 points and five rebounds, while adding a team-high three assists.
Jacksonville State was led by Nekiyah Thompson's 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting while converting all three three-point attempts. Rhodes added 13 points off the bench in 15 minutes' action, while Keiara Griffin and Kennedy Gavin had seven rebounds apiece.
First Half
The Sycamores scored eight of the first nine points with Folks,
Del'Janae Williams, and Hunter all scoring over the first 3:46 to put Indiana State ahead early. The Sycamores led 13-7 on a Folks outside jumper at the 4:41 mark and held a 14-9 lead on another Folks free throw, before Jacksonville State rallied back. The Gamecocks found their way back to cut the lead down to 15-14 on a pair of Keiara Griffin free throws, before Hunters' put-back at the buzzer gave Indiana State the three-point lead at the break.
Indiana State scored eight of the first 12 points in the second quarter with Curry scoring a pair of layups over the stretch to put the Sycamores ahead 25-18 with 5:57 remaining. The Gamecocks rallied back to tie the game up at 27-27 on a Madison McCoy layup, before ISU scored the final four points to take the 31-27 lead into the break.
Second Half
Natalia Lalic put the first points on the board for the Sycamores in the second half with a layup at the 8:12 mark to set up a back-and-forth third quarter. Hunter added a jumper in the paint at the 5:10 mark to give Indiana State the 42-37 lead before Jacksonville State went on a 9-2 run to close out the quarter with Griffin's three-point play putting the Gamecocks ahead 46-44 heading into the fourth.
The Sycamores rallied back from the third quarter deficit with Curry putting Indiana State ahead 49-48 with 8:53 remaining. Indiana State's lead would reach five points at 54-49 on another Curry layup before the Gamecocks went on their closing run to secure the win.

- Jacksonville State was 43.9% from the floor, 15.8% from the three-point line, and 70.0% from the free throw line in the win.
