TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State women's soccer fell to Evansville in penalty kicks in an MVC Quarterfinal match on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Evansville advances to play Valparaiso on Friday in an MVC Semifinal match.
Indiana State finishes the season with a 6-7-4 (4-2-2) record while Evansville's record moves to 6-4-7 (2-3-3) on the year.
Regulation
The first half saw a possession battle around midfield until the 15
th minute of the match where both offenses began to put the pressure on. The Sycamores were able to put a ball in the box which was deflected by an Aces defender right to
Anna Holcombe who fired a shot past Evansville goalie Michaela Till for her first goal of the season.
The Sycamores controlled possession throughout the rest of the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Indiana State outshot the Aces 4-3 in the first half with four different Sycamores attempting a shot. Emily Ormson paced Evansville with two attempts.
Evansville got off to a hot start in the second half when Rachel Rosborough connected on a Jayme-Lee Hunter pass to score her first goal of the season. Her goal tied the match just two minutes into the half.
Indiana State put up 17 shots in the second half but were kept off the board by Michaela Till.
The Sycamores were able to control possession throughout the period to limit Evansville to three shots.
With less than two minutes to play in regulation,
Mackenzie Kent drew a foul in the box, awarding Indiana State with a penalty kick.
CeCe Wahlberg's attempt was saved by Michaela Till to keep the match tied at one and force overtime.
Overtime
Early in the first overtime,
Audrey Stephens had a potential game-winner blocked by Till who had come out of the box to make the stop.
Evansville put two shots on goal in the first overtime, both of which were saved by
Maddie Alexander.
Both teams put shots on goal in the second overtime but were kept off the board which sent the match into penalty kicks.
Indiana State finished with 26 shots, putting 10 on goal. Evansville recorded nine shots with six on goal.
Maddie Alexander made five saves on the afternoon while Michaela Till finished with nine.
CeCe Wahlberg led the Sycamores with six shots while Emily Ormson attempted three to lead the Purple Aces.
Penalties
The first round of penalty kicks were successful for both teams with
Maddie Alexander and Abby Phelps making their attempts.
Emily Ormson put the Purple Aces up 2-1 in PK's with her attempt. Michaela Till saved
Isabella Hunter's attempt to keep Evansville up 2-1.
Emilie Hill was successful on her attempt to keep the Purple Aces perfect on their kicks.
Audrey Stephens stepped up and made her attempt to keep Indiana State alive in the match.
Blair Morgan scored next for Evansville to keep the pressure on the Sycamores.
Mackenzie Kent would score her attempt to make it 4-3.
Only needing one more successful try to win the match, Jayme-Lee Hunter scored to win on PK's 5-3, and send Evansville into the MVC semi-finals.
Stats and Notes
Anna Holcombe's goal in the first half was the first MVC Tournament goal for Indiana State since 2013.
Indiana State held a commanding 9-3 edge in corner kicks and the defense held the opponent to single-digit shot attempts for the fourth time this season.
Sunday marked the first Indiana State match to go into penalty kicks since the 2012 season.
