VALPARAISO, Ind. – Indiana State volleyball saw its nine-match winning streak come to an end Friday night against Valparaiso. The Beacons took the match in straight sets (19-25, 21-25, 21-25) in their home opener inside the Athletic-Recreation Center.
The Sycamores (9-3, 1-1 MVC) struggled on the attack throughout the match with a .113 hitting percentage after entering play atop the Missouri Valley Conference in the category. Valpo was able to limit the Trees' offensive weapons as
Madeline Williams was the lone Sycamore to notch double-digit kills with 10 in the match.
Mallory Keller and
Kaitlyn Hamilton added seven kills apiece.
Freshman
Emma Kaelin and
Chloe Mason split duties in the passing game, with Kaelin tallying 13 assists and six digs. Mason contributed 14 assists, one service ace and eight digs.
Haley Hart paced Valpo (11-3, 2-1 MVC) on the attack with a match high 15 kills on a .520 attacking percentage. Elise Swistek added 10 kills and 10 digs. Brittany Anderson controlled the passing game for the Beacons with 20 assists while Victoria Bulmahn aided on 18 kills. Rylee Cookerly added was one of three Valpo players with double-digit digs with 16 on the night.
Set One: 25-19, Valpo
- ISU recorded eight attack errors in the set.
- Hamilton led ISU with four kills.
- ISU trailed by six points late, before closing the gap to 19-19 before Valpo went on to win the set.
- Indiana State hit just .119 to Valpo's .300.
Set Two: 25-21, Valpo
- The Sycamores led 7-5 before Valpo went on a 7-2 run to take the lead.
- ISU rallied back to within one point at 21-20but Valpo reeled off four-straight to close the set.
- ISU ramped up the defense with three blocks in the set led by
Jamie Brown.
- Keller and Hamilton led ISU with three kills each but Swistek tallied six for Valpo.
Set Three: 25-21, Valpo
- Valpo put together its best defensive set holding ISU to a .057 attacking percentage.
- ISU tallied eight errors to go along with its 10 kills.
- Hart led Valpo with six kills on 10 attacks.
The Sycamores return to action Saturday afternoon when the team wraps up its road trip with a match against Loyola. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET from Gentile Arena.
