EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Indiana State women's volleyball used an impressive offensive outing to defeat Evansville in Meeks Family Fieldhouse on Friday evening, 3-1, after falling 0-3 in Terre Haute on Monday.
The Sycamores and Aces both move to 1-1 (1-1) on the year with the ISU victory.
Sophomore setter
Chloe Mason earned her 15th-career double-double on Friday, ending with a team-high 26 assists and 13 digs.
Mary Hannah Lewis contributed 23 assists and the Sycamores ended the match with a 59-51 advantage in the assist category.
The Indiana State defense was strong once again with three Sycamores tallying 10 or more digs including Mason (13),
Ashley Eck (12) and
Melina Tedrow (12). As a team, ISU held the advantage over the Aces, 61-53. The Blue & White also ended with the advantage at the net, ending with 12 blocks compared to Evansville's 10.
Madeline Williams recorded four block assists and
Karinna Gall added three of her own.
On the offensive side of the net, freshman
Mallory Keller had an impressive match. Keller finished with a team-best 16 kills while hitting .367. Williams chipped-in with 12 kills, hitting .524 and fellow freshman
Kaitlyn Hamilton added eight kills while hitting .438.
In the end, the Trees ended their night with 62 kills, hitting .324 while the Purple Aces tallied 51 kills and hit .221.
The Sycamore offense exploded in the third set after falling 25-19 in set two. ISU tallied 18 kills to Evansville's seven en route to a 25-14 set victory to give them the 2-1 match lead. Set four began in a similar fashion for the Trees, as ISU rushed out to a 7-2 lead. The Aces would respond with a run of their own, eventually taking a 14-12 lead. The two teams continued to exchange blows until Indiana State used a 4-0 run capped off by a Williams service ace to take a 22-18 lead and never look back.
Indiana State returns to action this week when they travel to Indianapolis on Thursday for a match with Butler.
