TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head coach
Curt Mallory announced Monday the addition of
Desmond Morgan to his coaching staff. Morgan will coach the linebackers for the Sycamores.
Morgan comes to Terre Haute after spending the 2019 season at the University of Minnesota as the Golden Gophers special teams quality control coordinator. Prior to his time in Minnesota, Morgan spent two years at Maryland as a defensive graduate assistant.
Morgan was a graduate assistant coach at Wayne State University in 2016 where he worked primarily with the offensive line and help with day-to-day operations.
Morgan played football at Michigan and was a four-year letterman at linebacker. He saw action in 47 career games and made 40 career starts. The Holland, Michigan native was a two-time semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, given to the top football scholar-athlete in the nation.
In 2015, Morgan earned Defensive All-Big Ten Honorable Mention accolades as a senior and received the team's Roger Zatkoff Award, given to Michigan's best linebacker.
A three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Morgan was also voted to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. In addition, he was a National Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete.
Morgan graduated from West Ottawa High School in 2011 and was selected as The Holland Sentinel Defensive Player of the Year in 2010. He recorded 72 tackles as a senior and forced four fumbles despite missing time due to injury. Morgan was also the team's quarterback and passed for 519 yards and five touchdowns, while running for 802 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2011 as a senior.
Morgan graduated from Michigan in December of 2015 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education.
