NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Indiana State softball dropped its first game of the Purple and Gold Challenge to UMBC, 1-0, Friday afternoon behind a combined shutout from UMBC's Courtney Coppersmith and Madie Leach.
Coppersmith (2-0) was dominant in the circle for the Retrievers as she helped guide UMBC to their third victory of the season. The left-hander only allowed three hits while striking out 12 Sycamores (5-10) over six innings of action. Madie Leach was credited with the save closing the door with one strikeout earning her first save of the year.
UMBC (3-2) jumped out in front in the first frame after leading the game off with a triple to center field from Maddie Daigneau. Courtney Coppersmith drove Daigneau in with a ground ball to the right side scoring the lone run for the Retrievers.
Amanda Guercio recorded a multi-hit game for the Sycamores with a single and a double in the contest.
Gabbi Schnaiter took the loss for the Sycamores after allowing one run in the complete game performance. The senior falls to 2-4 on the year. Schnaiter gave up five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
