BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Indiana State softball dropped its nightcap to host Western Kentucky, 4-0, Friday night at the Hilltopper Classic behind a complete game shutout from WKU's Kelsey Aikey.
Aikey (5-1) was dominant in the circle for the Hilltoppers as she helped guide WKU to their ninth-straight victory on the season. The right-hander allowed just one base hit while striking out 10 Sycamores (3-8) over seven innings of action.
Western Kentucky (10-2) jumped out in front in the third frame after notching a pair of runs. Jordan Thomas kicked off the scoring frame for the Hilltoppers with a leadoff triple to left field before crossing the plate two batters later when an errant throw to first allowed Thomas to scamper home. Kendall Smith would drive in the second run of the frame on a sacrifice fly.
The Hilltoppers added two more insurance runs; one in the fifth and another in the sixth as they cruised to their 10
th win of the season.
Leslie Sims recorded the lone hit of the night for the Sycamores with a single in the sixth inning.
Abbey Kruzel took the loss for the Sycamores after allowing two runs over two innings in the start. The junior falls to 1-2 on the year.
Lexi Benko was solid out of the bullpen for the Sycamores as she went three innings and allowed just two base hits while striking out a pair of Hilltoppers.
