TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State moved to 1-0 on the season with an 80-66 season-opening victory over Truman State Tuesday night at the newly renovated Hulman Center.
The Sycamores had four double-digit scorers in the win, led by graduate transfer
Randy Miller Jr. with 19 points and
Tre Williams with 16 points.
Jake LaRavia and
Cooper Neese added 13 and 10 points respectively.
Indiana State used a 47-30 second-half outburst to overcome a halftime deficit. Williams, a sophomore center for the Sycamores opened the second half with four-straight points out of the post to help ISU ahead 37-36 before Neese knocked down a pair of triples to extend the run to 10-0 forcing the bulldogs to use a timeout. Williams added one more post score to make the lead 45-36 to end the 12-0 run.
Miller Jr. wasn't the only Sycamore making a debut as freshman
Julian Larry went for eight points on 3-of-7 shooting, five steals, and four assists.
Truman State took a 36-33 lead into the locker room after overcoming an early 8-0 deficit. TSU was lethal from deep, connecting on six triples in the first 20 minutes of action as Ben Cooper shot 3-for-5 and Sam Lock hit 2-of-3 from behind the arc.
Williams led the way for the Sycamore in the first half with eight points while Miller Jr. chipped in seven points.
Eric Northweather led Truman with 20 points while Ben Cooper and Sam Lock had 16 apiece.
Indiana State shot 31-of-67 overall (46.3 percent) and 5-of-21 from three (23.8 percent) while Truman State shot 25-of-59 (42.4 percent) from the field and 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) from deep.
The Sycamores return to action Saturday when the team travels to West Lafayette, Indiana to take on Purdue. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Mackey Arena. The game is scheduled to air on the Big Ten Network.
