Trees Claim Back-to-Back Wins for First Time Since 2019

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  – After falling to Murray State a year ago in Murray, Ky., Sycamore women's basketball claimed back-to-back wins for the first time since January 2019 with an 84-80 victory over the Racers in Hulman Center.

Indiana State's victory gave them their second win of the season and they improve to 2-1 while Murray State fell to 1-2 on the year.

The 84-80 win marks the first time since since Mar. 10-11, 2011 that the Sycamores have scored at least 80 points in back-to-back games.

Caitlin Anderson led the way offensively for the Trees with 18 points to go along with four steals while Adrian Folks tallied 13 points with nine rebounds. In total, six Trees scored in double-figures, including Jamyra McChristine (15), Sommer Pitzer (11), Essy Latu (10) and Marie Hunter (10).

As a team, the Sycamores and Racers were even in rebounding at 38 and assists with 16, but ISU ended with 13 steals to the Racers' 12. Indiana State finished the game 32-of-70 for 45.7% from the floor.

Finding themselves down, 65-64, in the final frame, the Blue & White would not let a late lead slip away again. A 7-0 run that featured a Hunter jumper, Pitzer triple and Folks layup helped push their lead back to 71-65. Murray State would managed to pull back within three with 38 seconds remaining, but they Sycamores managed to knock down their free throws to pull away for the 84-80 victory.

There was no shortage of offense early in the game with the Sycamores starting the matchup on an 11-3 terror, capped off by an Anderson pull-up jumper with 6:27 remaining. The offense would continue to heat-up, eventually pushing the Sycamore lead to 14 at 25-11 with 1:42 remaining in the period. ISU would hold a 26-16 advantage at the end of one.

The offensive momentum would swing back in favor of Murray State in the second quarter, with the Racers pulling to within three at the 8:01 mark thanks to a Katelyn Young second chance opportunity. Despite only shooting 2-of-11 from deep in the first half, the Sycamores would manage to fend off the run behind 11 first half points from Anderson and Folks to take the 42-37 lead into halftime.

Murray State managed to claim the lead multiple times in the third period, but the Sycamores used their post presence to retake the lead, 46-45 thanks to McChristine and redshirt freshman Mya Glanton. After regaining the lead, it was back-and-forth the entire period as the Sycamores led 62-59 after three. Pitzer played a huge role in keeping the Trees in front with eight third quarter points.

It's a quick turnaround for Indiana State as they host Western Illinois on Monday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. ET in the Hulman Center. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
