SAINT LOUIS, Mo. -- The Indiana State men's basketball team (1-2) was stymied by undefeated Saint Louis University (6-0) Tuesday, Dec. 15, falling 78-59 at Chaifetz Arena.
Senior
Tyreke Key led the way for the Sycamores, pouring in 16 points while adding four assists and three rebounds. Joining Key in double-digits was
Tre Williams, who netted 12 points, grabbed five boards and swatted one shot, and
Jake LaRavia, who added 10 points with a team-high six rebounds and one block.
Saint Louis' Jordan Goodwin led all scorers with 22 points and added 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.
Despite SLU jumping ahead to an early lead, Indiana State erased an 18-point first-half deficit to trail just 35-27 at the halftime break. The Billikens fired on all cylinders in the second half, outpacing the Sycamores 43-31 thanks to a 63.3 shooting percentage (19-of-30) from the floor.
Though Indiana State finished with just 12 turnovers in the contest, Saint Louis controlled the other key facets of the game, outrebounding the Trees 39-26, and dominating the paint scoring, 48-18. The Billikens finished the contest shooting 56.7 percent (34-of-60) from the floor while holding the Sycamores to just 35.8 percent (19-of-53).
The Sycamores managed to get to the charity stripe 20 times, shooting 75 percent (15-of-20) compared to the Billikens' eight attempts and 50 percent (4-of-8) shooting, and held the fast-paced SLU offense to just six fast break points.
Indiana State is slated to return to the friendly confines of the Hulman Center to take on in-state foe Ball State University Saturday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and on WIBQ 97.9 FM.
