TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State football improved to 2-2 on the season following a 16-6 victory over regional rival Eastern Illinois Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Leading 13-6 in the fourth quarter, Indiana State used a 34-yard interception return from
Denzel Bonner to setup a
Jerry Nunez field goal to make it a 10-point game with nine minutes left to play.
The Sycamores picked up 19 first downs on the afternoon which led to 343 yards of total offense. The ISU defense was dominant throughout the day, holding the Panthers (0-4) to just 200 yards of total offense.
Indiana State forced four turnovers on the day with three interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Indiana State took a 13-0 lead into the locker room at halftime thanks in part to 239 yards of total offense in the first 30 minutes. Nunez broke the Indiana State all-time field goal mark on the first drive of the game with a 23-yard attempt. The field goal marked the 43
rd of his career, breaking the record previously held by Kyle Hooper since 2006.
Entering the game following an injury to
Ryan Boyle early, quarterback
Kurtis Wilderman connected with
Rontrez Morgan for a 69-yard touchdown on a screen play late in the first quarter of action. It marked the longest pass and catch of either Wilderman and Morgan in their careers.
With 1:59 left in the second quarter, Nunez etched his name in history one more passing Kyle Hooper for the all-time scoring record at Indiana State. In the last seven days, Nunez broke a pair of ISU kicking records including career PAT's, field goals as well as the scoring mark.
The Sycamore defense held strong throughout the opening half, allowing just 68 yards of total offense to the Panthers. Senior
Clayton Glasco put on a defensive clinic in the first half, finishing with six tackles, a sack and an interception.
Jonas Griffith led all Sycamores with 12 tackles on the day while Glasco finished with nine stops, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and an interception. Bonner also had a solid day at the safety position with seven tackles and an interception.
Hameed Oyedele picked off Harry Woodberry in the third quarter.
Indiana State recorded 148 yards on the ground with four players recording 20 or more yards. Wilderman led all players with 50 yards on 15 carries.
Nick Sims picked up 43 yards on 11 carries while
Titus McCoy returned from injury to rush 11 times for 30 yards.
Peterson Kerlegrand recorded four rushes for 23 yards.
Wilderman settled in to finish 14-of-22 through the air for 186 yards and a touchdown. Morgan led the receiving corps with four catches for 90 yards and a score while
Dante Hendrix caught four passes for 37 yards.
Dante Jones II also had three receptions for 34 yards.
EIU's Austin Johnson led all players with 13 tackles, including three tackles for loss. Chris Walker had 49 yards rushing on 10 carries while Woodberry took a majority of the snaps for the Panthers, finishing 8-of-22 for 63 yards while throwing a pair of interceptions.
The Sycamores will be back in action October 5 at South Dakota following a bye week.
