Sycamores Fend Off Jaguars’ Comeback, Defeat IUPUI in Three Sets

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Sycamores claimed their second consecutive victory of the season on Tuesday evening, withstanding a comeback attempt by IUPUI in the third set to take the match, 3-0.
 
Indiana State came out hot, winning the first set 25-11 and then the second, 25-12. IUPUI battled back in the third set, but the Sycamores showed grit and claimed the frame, 31-29.
 
Defensively the Trees were superb, forcing the Jaguars to hit -.044, the first time holding an opponent to negative hitting since Sept.1, 208 against Winthrop. The Sycamores also tallied 70 digs on the match for 23.33 digs-per-set. Libero Melina Tedrow finished with 20 digs, making it her fourth match of the year crossing the 20-dig threshold.
 
Across the net, IUPUI tallied 61 digs and were led by their libero, Rachel Hickey with 23.
 
The blue and white also ended with 6 total blocks, including two block assists and a solo block from Madeline Williams, while the Jags only finished with three total blocks.
 
On the offensive side Indiana State was led by redshirt senior Cassie Kawa. The senior-leader led the squad with 11 kills and also earned four block assists throughout the match as well. As a team, the Sycamores hit .161.
 
Setters Chloe Mason and Mary Hannah Lewis once again split the workload, recording 13 and 12 assists, respectively. ISU finished with 31 assists to IUPUI's 28.
 
Set One - Indiana State 25, IUPUI 11
  • Indiana State was dominant in the first frame, hitting .227 while holding IUPUI to -.235.
  • Nikkie White successfully attacked the net, earning four kills.
  • Tedrow and Taylor Shelton each recorded five of the Sycamores' 15 digs in the set. The Jaguars only earned 10.
  • The Jaguars finished with the edge in total blocks, 2-0.
 
Set Two - Indiana State 25, IUPUI 12
  • The Sycamores once agained forced IUPUI to hit negative at -.205.
  • Kawa recorded four of her 11 kills in the frame. She also earned three block assists.
  • Indiana State tallied nine kills compared to five from the Jags.
 
Set Three - Indiana State 31, IUPUI 29
  • It was a battle to the end, with the blue and white even facing match point once, but ISU held of IUPUI for a 31-29 win.
  • Kawa and freshman Gretchen Kuckkan had impressive offensive performances in the frame, ending with six and five kills, respectively.
  • Tedrow and senior Jade York both gathered seven digs en route to the team's set total of 35.
  • The Jaguars had their best offensive set of the night, hitting .156, but ISU still managed to hit better at .167.
 
Up Next: Indiana State will get over a week to rest before they kick-off the conference season at Drake and Northern Iowa on Sept. 27 and 28.
