GREEN BAY, Wis. – It was a valiant effort from the Sycamore faithful at the final match of the Green Bay Invitational, but Green Bay managed to hold off Indiana State's rally attempt on Sunday afternoon.
Down 2-1, ISU managed to force a fifth set with the Phoenix, but ultimately Green Bay claimed the victory 3-2 [20-25, 25-16
, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9].
Cassie Kawa was named to the Green Bay Invitational All-Tournament team. Throughout the weekend, Kawa recorded 19 kills and an impressive nine blocks, giving her .75 blocks-per-set.
It was a better offensive day for the blue and white on Sunday with the team tallying 50 kills and
Madeline Williams leading the way with 17 of her own. Overall, Indiana State hit .120 and Williams led the individual effort at .350.
In the assist category, the duo of
Chloe Mason and
Mary Hannah Lewis split the workload against Green Bay, recording 23 and 18 assists, respectively. The Sycamores ended with 49 total assists compared to 60 by the opposition.
For the second time in three days, freshman
Gretchen Kuckkan registered a double-double with 11 kills, which was the second-most on the team, and 15 digs.
On the offensive side, the Phoenix ended up hitting .202 for the game to go along with 63 kills on the day. Taylor Wolf led the offensive charge with 24 kills and a hitting percentage of .477.
Defensively,
Melina Tedrow and
Jade York both finished with 20 digs, helping the Trees to their team total of 86. Green Bay ended the day with 83 digs. The Phoenix earned the edge in the blocks category, 11-6.
Set One - Indiana State 25, Green Bay 20
- Indiana State battled to a 13-13 tie midway through the frame, but ended up taking off and winning the set 25-20.
- Williams recorded five kills and no errors to lead the offensive charge.
- The Sycamores hit .294 compared to Green Bay's .200.
- Defense was key as the Trees racked-up 24 digs, with seven by York, while Green Bay only finished with 18.
Set Two - Green Bay 25, Indiana State 16
- Green Bay used two separate 4-0 runs to pull away from ISU and win the set.
- Kuckkan and Rhiannon Morozoff both recorded three kills in the frame while ISU struggled to hit at .000 with 10 kills and 10 attack errors.
- Tedrow tallied seven digs on defense for the blue and white to help the team reach 21 total for the set while the Phoenix only notched 20.
Set Three - Green Bay 25, Indiana State 18
- Tied at 12, the Phoenix used an offensive surge to push the score to 23-15 and eventually take the frame.
- ISU hit .088 with 10 kills while the opposition hit .333 with 13 kills.
- Mason and Lewis pushed their assist totals to 14 and 13, respectively.
- ISU only recorded 12 digs in the third set to Green Bay's 14.
Set Four - Indiana State 25, Green Bay 23
- Down 22-20, Indiana State ended set four on a 5-1 run to force a fifth set with the tournament hosts.
- The Sycamores hit better than Green Bay in the frame, .125-.070. Morozoff led the Trees with four kills.
- Defense was strong for ISU, as the team registered four blocks in the set to help keep the Phoenix offense in check.
- Indiana State also recorded 19 digs, led by four each from Tedrow and York.
Set Five - Green Bay 15, Indiana State 9
- Green Bay opened on a 6-1 run and never looked back.
- Though the Trees finished with more attacks during the set (25-24), they only recorded six kills. Green Bay ended the final frame at 10 kills.
- The Phoenix out-hit the Sycamores, .292-.120 during the fifth set.
