TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State recorded a season high for both shots and shots on goal, but it was visiting SIU Edwardsville who earned a 4-0 victory over the Sycamores on what turned into a sunny afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
The Sycamores fell to 0-4 on the season while SIUE leveled their season record at 1-1-1.
ISU posted a season-high 18 shots on the season, including four from freshman Kate Face. Jensen Margheim tallied three while Sarah Clancy and Anna Holcombe had two each. The Sycamores were credited with eight shots on goal in the contest with Margheim tallying a pair and Danielle Varner, Celeste Wahlberg, Olivia Sharar, Face, Lindsey Anstine and Liz Humphrey the others.
Hannah Sullivan had three saves in the game while freshman Tara Hoffman made her Sycamore debut and recorded one save.
The Sycamores got each of the first three shots in the match when Kate Face had two good looks and then Alise Emser tried a header off a corner kick which sailed just high. SIU Edwardsville went on the offensive and put a shot past the goalkeeper which bounded off the right post. Freshman Emma Dutko was right there to take the rebound and kicked the ball inside the frame work in the 10th minute to stake the Cougars to an early 1-0 advantage.
Indiana State had an opportunity to equalize the match in the 34th minute when Katie Sidloski fired a shot at the goal which was blocked and then Lindsay Anstine took the rebound and put a beautiful shot up towards the upper left corner of the framework but SIUE goalkeeper Bella Henderson made a leaping save to keep ISU off the board.
The Sycamores peppered the goal continuously in the opening 45 minutes holding a 12-8 advantage in shots including six of which came on goal. In the waning seconds of the opening half, freshman and Terre Haute native Liz Humphrey fired a shot towards the left post but it was caught by SIUE goalkeeper Jensen Schoch to end the threat.
Olivia Sharar had a good look from 25 yards out on a free kick which was stopped by the Cougar goalkeeper in the 56th minute. SIUE counterattacked and Lily Schneiders found the top right of the framework in the 58th minute to push the Cougar advantage out to 2-0.
Despite several offensive chances for the Sycamores, SIU Edwardsville continued to take advantage of theirs when MacKenzie Litzsinger went one-on-one with freshman goalkeeper Tara Hoffman and pushed the ball into the back right corner of the net in the 74th minute to extend the lead out to 3-0. Litzinger added a late goal into the lower right portion of the framework in the 88th minute to push their lead out to 4-0.
SIUE held a 19-18 edge in shots as well as a 9-8 cushion in shots on goal. Corner kicks were level at 5.
