ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Indiana State baseball team picked up its second win over a ranked opponent Tuesday night as the Sycamores defeated No. 24 Michigan, 8-7, in 10 innings inside Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor. With the win, ISU improved to 24-6 on the season while the Wolverines dropped to 22-9.
Â
Jake Means sent a no-doubt home run over the 25-foot wall in left field with two-out and no one on in the top of the 10th to give the Sycamores the edge before
Tyler Grauer closed out the game in the bottom of the inning. The home run from Means was the 20th of the season for the Trees and the first in 11 games for ISU.
Â
Tyler Ward pitched four innings out of the bullpen for ISU as he earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. Ward allowed four hits and a run while retiring three Wolverines on strikeouts. In typical midweek fashion, Indiana State sent five different arms to the mound in the game.
Geremy Guerrero made the start, going two and two-third innings, allowing five runs to the high-powered Michigan offense.
Evan Giles and
Will Buraconak bridged the middle innings for the Sycamores, allowing just one earned run.
Â
After Michigan led off the 10th with back-to-back singles, Grauer recorded a strikeout before forcing a ground ball to turn a double play to end the game. The lefty picked up his team-leading sixth save of the year with the outing.
Â
ISU matched its weekend total against Michigan State with 11 hits in the game.
Jake Means and
Clay Dungan each tallied three hits. Means drove in two runs while Dungan went for a pair of doubles in five at bats. Catcher
Max Wright also had multiple hits while driving in a run.
Â
Means got the Trees on the board early with an RBI single to right field, scoring
Luke Fegen from third in the opening frame. Michigan wasted no time answering back as Jordan Nwogu led off the UM half with an equalizing home run to left field. Miles Lewis put the Wolverines in front with a homer to left center in the same inning.
Â
ISU jumped back out in front in the third, scoring four runs. The first on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to Wright before
Romero Harris cleared the bases with a three-run double to center to push the Sycamores out in front 5-2.
Â
Michigan again answered ISU's run with three of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the third before taking the lead on a two-run home run in the sixth off the bat of Jesse Franklin.
Â
Indiana State would chip away and eventually tie the game after notching single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
CJ Huntley made it a one-run game after scoring from third on a wild pitch in the seventh before the Trees tied it on a ground ball double play in the eighth. Â
Â
Isaiah Paige went two and a third innings in the start for the Wolverines, allowing two earned runs and striking out three. The loss was charged to Willie Weiss after allowing the go-ahead run in the 10th. Weiss fell to 2-2 on the season.
Â
Joe Donovan and Blake Nelson led UM with two hits each while Nwogu, Franklin and Donovan each drove in two runs.
Â
The contest marked the fifth extra-inning contest of the year for ISU and the fourth in the last eight games.
Â
The Sycamores will conclude their nine-game road swing Wednesday at 5 p.m. with a seven-inning contest against the Wolverines due to travel.
