CHICAGO – Indiana State couldn't escape the rain or the big inning Sunday as an eight-run frame in the third proved too much to overcome in a 14-8 loss at Loyola Chicago.
Sunday's game had been delayed two hours in an effort to escape the weather but Mother Nature had other plans as the game was bookended with rain at the start and finish, with the latter causing a short rain delay. In between, Loyola Chicago (20-14, 4-8 Missouri Valley) used a three-run first and an eight-run third to jump out to an 11-3 lead.
From there on out, Indiana State (13-23, 1-10) kept having to play catch up.
Brooke Mann would score on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and the Sycamores would add four more runs in the fifth with
Shaye Barton pushing one across on a double to center and
Amanda Guercio following that with a sac fly. Two batters later
Brooke Mann and
Mallory Marsicek would smack back-to-back RBI hits – Marsicek's being a double off the wall – that pulled Indiana State within three at 11-8. Guercio led Indiana State at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI and a run scored.
But just as the Trees got close, Loyola would pull away. The Ramblers hit a two-run home run in the fifth – their third home run of the game – while an ISU error allowed one more run to score in the sixth. Indiana State would not score in the seventh, which came following a four-minute rain delay.
Madison Ebeling lead the Ramblers with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI. Half of Loyola's 16 hits in the game were for extra bases.
Gabbi Schnaiter (6-10) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits in a start that lasted just 2.1 innings.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Several players had good performances at the plate but the most efficient may have been
Amanda Guercio. The sophomore was 2-for-3 with two RBI – one off a sac fly – and a run scored. With efficient plate appearances like that, she gets the honor today.
STAT OF THE GAME
The 11 hits recorded by the Sycamores marked the third time in five games that Indiana State has recorded double-digit hits.
