WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana State struck for three runs early and added three more but couldn't stop a late Purdue rally in a 9-6 loss in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday evening.
Â
Amanda Guercio continued her hot hitting from the first game, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Both of those RBI came in the first inning as her two-run double followed
Shaye Barton's RBI single to give the Trees a 3-0 lead.
Â
After Purdue drove in two runs with back-to-back hits – a single followed by a triple – in the third to cut the ISU lead to one, the Sycamores responded by scoring a pair of runs aided by one of Purdue's two errors in the game. Each team added a run in the fifth – ISU's by a sac fly from
Bella Peterson to score Guercio – to give a 6-4 tally entering the sixth inning.
Â
Then Purdue's rally slowly began to take form. The Boilermakers recorded five straight hits in the inning to take its first lead of the game, 7-6, before Indiana State could record an out. Nearly out of the inning, ISU gave up a two-out, two-run single as Purdue pushed across two more runs.
Â
Gabbi Schnaiter (5-6) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits while facing four batters in the sixth. Sydney Bates (9-4) recorded her second win of the day, allowing just one earned run (three runs overall) on six hits in 6.2 innings in relief. Indiana State had chased starting pitcher Kaitlynn Moody with just one out in the first inning after she allowed three runs on two hits.
