TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State fell prey to a pair of big innings in the second game of a doubleheader against Illinois State Saturday, dropping the day's finale in five innings, 14-2.
The Sycamores (11-15, 1-4 Missouri Valley) two runs on the game came in an error-filled third inning in which the visiting Redbirds (11-20, 5-0) committed four errors. But despite the several miscues by Illinois State, the Trees would only push across two runs in the inning and strand four on base in the game overall, including just one in that inning.
Meanwhile Illinois State would bookend the game with a pair of seven-run frames, starting with seven runs on seven hits in the first inning that began with a one-out, three-run home run. An RBI single by Brittni LaFountaine added one more run before Shannon Felde drove in two runs on a single up the middle. Riley Haley drove in one final run before Felde would get thrown out on the basepaths.
Illinois State would not send a runner across the plate until the fifth inning when they added seven more runs. The Redbirds tallied those runs on seven hits while the Sycamores committed their second error of the game.
Tessa Sims (1-3) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs on five hits in 0.2 innings.
Arielle Blankenship allowed six runs on seven hits while striking out two in 3.2 innings in relief before
Abbey Kruzel tossed the final 0.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Ali Dumkuski (4-3) claimed the win after throwing a complete game without allowing an earned run. In all, she allowed two runs on five hits.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Becky Malchow gets the nod by playing opportunistic softball. She reached on an error in the third inning, moved to second on a
Leslie Sims single, moved to third on a throwing error then scored on
Brooke Mann's RBI groundout to second. Malchow also recorded an assist in the outfield.
