LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Indiana State committed three errors and allowed six runs in the sixth inning in a 7-1 loss to host Louisville in the opening game of the Cardinal Classic Friday morning.
Bailey Martin led ISU with a 3-for-4 day at the plate – her third consecutive game with at least three hits – while
Leslie Sims' 2-for-4 performance led to the Sycamores' only run. That score came in the top of the first as she led the game off with an infield single and then was eventually sent home on a bases loaded walk.
Louisville (8-6) responded in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to left center that scored Kyra Snyder, who led the inning off with a double.
The Sycamores (7-4) had spent over three innings in a 1-1 tie with the Atlantic Coast Conference's Cardinals (8-6) before three separate miscues in the bottom of the sixth allowed Louisville to break open the tie, scoring six runs on three hits with those three errors. Four of the six Louisville runs in the inning came with two outs.
Gabbi Schnaiter (3-1) suffered her first loss of the year, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings in the circle. Megan Hensley (2-1) claimed the win with one run allowed on six hits in four innings and six strikeouts while Taylor Roby (1) claimed the save, allowing only one Sycamore hit over the final three innings. She fanned three and did not issue a walk.
Celene Funke led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Snyder, whose leadoff double in the second led to a run, drove in two runs herself in a 1-for-2 performance.
