Sycamores Remain Unbeaten after 8-4 Victory at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Indiana State baseball continued its unbeaten streak Tuesday night after defeating Western Carolina, 8-4, in midweek action on the road. The Sycamores used a two-run sixth and a four-run seventh inning to roll past the Catamounts and improve to 7-0 on the season.

Once again, Indiana State had solid performances on the mound from a trio of hurlers. Geremy Guerrero, Austin Cross and Jake Ridgway combined for the nine innings on the mound. Cross (1-0), a Hillsboro, Kansas native, tossed two and two-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen en route to the victory. The right-hander allowed just one base hit in relief.

Ridgway recorded his second save of the season after pitching the final three innings on the mound. The right-hander struck out three Catamount hitters and allowed just one base hit and one run scored (unearned).

Guerrero, a junior southpaw, made his first start of the season for ISU on the mound and allowed just two earned runs to a high-powered Western Carolina lineup which had outscored opponents 57-28 in five games to start the season. The Metamora, Illinois product recorded five strikeouts in three and a third innings, including three-straight strikeouts to open the game.

Roby Enriquez and Hunter Lewis put the Sycamores on the board in the third inning after Clay Dungan and Joe Boyle were hit-by-pitch in back-to-back plate appearances. Enriquez' singled to center to plate Dungan before Lewis drove a ball to right field to score Boyle.

The Catamounts (4-2) tied the game in the bottom half of the third on solo home runs from Matthew Koehler and Daylan Nanny -- both hit over the wall in right field. WCU would take a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Koehler singled through the right side of the infield to score a run.

Indiana State didn't wait long to go back out in front as Dungan rolled into an RBI groundout in the sixth to plate Jake Means. Boyle would later single through the left side to score Max Wright from third to put the Sycamores out in front once again.

A four-run seventh inning was all the insurance the Sycamores would need to secure the win. After loading the bases, Means collected an RBI after being hit-by-pitch for the second time in the game. Luke Fegen and Wright each tallied sacrifice RBIs and Dungan singled in a run with a liner out to left field. Western Carolina would plate an unearned run in the ninth but that would be all as Ridgway worked out of an early jam.

Indiana State was led by Hunter Lewis and Jarrod Watkins at the plate as the duo combined for a pair of hits in the win. Clay Dungan drove in two runs while Jake Means drove in a run and scored twice for ISU.

Ty McCulloch (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing a pair of runs in relief for WCU.

The Sycamores close an eight-game road trip to open the season Wednesday with a rematch with Western Carolina. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. ET from Hennon Stadium. The game can be seen on ESPN Plus.
