Five new members plus a track and field relay team were inducted into the Indiana State Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, February 1 on the campus of Indiana State University. The Indiana State Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet was presented by the ISU Credit Union and will held at the Sycamore Banquet Center inside the Hulman Memorial Student Union.
Those inducted as part of the 27th class include: Bill Hodges (Former Basketball Head Coach), Bob Elson (Head Equipment Manager), Steve Newton (Basketball), DeJuan Alfonzo (Football), Erica Moore (Women's Track and Field) and the 1968 Mile Relay Team (Men's Track & Field).
Each member of the 27th Class of the Indiana State University Athletics Hall Of Fame will be honored during the Sycamore Basketball game against Drake on Saturday, February 2 which begins at 2 pm (ET) inside Hulman Center.
Bill Hodges
Coach - Men's Basketball
1975-1982
- Head basketball coach at Indiana State (1979-1982)
- Missouri Valley Conference, Associated Press, United Press International, The Sporting News Coach of the Year (1979)
- Led Sycamores to Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships (1979)
- Led Sycamores to second place finish in NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament (1979)
- Compiled 67-48 record at Indiana State
- Guided the 1978-79 team to a 33-1 overall record, most wins in school history.
- Member of Indiana State Athletics Hall of Fame with the 1978-79 basketball team
- Assistant coach at Tennessee Tech 1970-1974, Indiana State 1975-1978, Long Beach State 1983-1984.
Bob Elson
Equipment
1975-2014
- Named Head of Equipment in 1983
- Truly one of the tireless workers in the Sycamore Athletics Department, who retired after completing his 39th season with the football program.
- He ran one of the best equipment rooms in all of college football, and many of his former students and graduate assistant equipment managers have moved on to manage equipment operations throughout the country.
- Some of Elson's former workers now run or have run the equipment operations for several major college football programs as well as NFL teams such as the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- A native of Brazil, Ind., Elson graduated from Brazil High School in 1966. Following a three-year stint in the U.S. Army, Elson received his bachelor's degree in sociology from ISU in 1973.
Steve Newton
Men's Basketball
1960-1963
- Graduate of Gerstmeyer High School, played for ISU Athletics Hall of Famer Howard Sharpe
- Played on two NAIA National Tournament teams (1962, 1963)
- An outstanding player at Indiana State. His college coach, Duane Klueh, asserts that Newton was "like a coach on the court" and "belongs in the Hall of Fame as a player."
- Was an assistant at the University of New Orleans, who captured the Associated Press Division II national championship (1972)
- Head coach at Murray State, posted a 116-65 record three NCAA tournament appearances and one NIT appearance
- Won four Ohio Valley Conference regular season championships and three tournament titles
- Named Athletics Director at University of Southern Indiana in 1995
- Served on NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Advisory Committee
- Inducted into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame in 2007
- Inducted into the Murray State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010

1968 Mile Relay Team

The 1968 Indiana State University track and field team were undefeated during the entire track season and were a finalist in the NCAA National Championships. The team was coached by Bill Malloy. The mile relay set a new school record of 3:17.8. The team captured the ICC Conference championship, won at the Mason-Dixon Games held at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky, were the champions of the Central Collegiate Conference (which included all Big 10 and Mid-America Conference schools along with major independents), the Big State Champions in the meet held at Purdue University where their school record was set, and champions of the IU Relays.
