Sycamores Fall Short Against CSUN Despite Double-Doubles from Echi, McChristine

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Sycamore women's basketball team mounted a quick fourth quarter comeback, but fell just short against CSUN despite double-doubles from LeAndra Echi and Jamyra McChristine.

CSUN held on for the win on Saturday, 67-59, and improved to 2-6 on the year while the Sycamores fell to 2-5.

Indiana State was led by McChristine who had her best game as a Sycamore, scorching the net for 18 points and pulling down 10 boards. Echi also put up a double-double, her third of the year, with 11 points and 10 boards. The Matadors outshot the Sycamores, 45.5%-38.2%, but ISU held the edge on the glass, 33-31.

Del'Janae Williams and Jasmine Elder also crossed the double-digit point threshold, recording 11 and 10, respectively. Williams connected for three triples and Elder one, making up the Trees' four made threes. Williams also led the ISU defensive effort with three of the team's 11 steals. Northridge ended the afternoon with 10 steals.

It was a slow start for both teams from the floor in the first period, with ISU getting their first point at the line from McChristine at the 8:21 mark. The first field goal came with 5:38 left in the period, again coming from McChristine, this time a layup. Despite the slow start, CSUN only led 13-8 at the first media.

Elder managed to connect with CeCe Mayo out of the timeout for a layup, but the Matadors would keep control, leading 19-12 at the end of the first.

The defensive intensity increased at the start of the second, as Williams stole the ball and converted an easy two on the first possession of the quarter. ISU and CSUN continued to trade blows over the next three minutes, but the Matadors managed to keep a seven-point lead at the media timeout.

Both teams went through an offensive drought for the four minutes following the timeout until CSUN connected on a triple to push the lead to double-digits. With 3:45 left in the half, Elder worked for a steal in the post and pushed the ball upcourt. McChristine finished the break with an easy deuce after some beautiful ball movement. Williams then followed with a triple with 59 seconds left, but the Matadors owned a 37-28 lead at the half.

It was an offensive flurry to start the second half for the Trees, recording five quick points thanks to a Williams three and Echi layup to pull to within four, 37-33, but Deja Williams quickly responded for Northridge, connecting on a triple. Williams would continue to kill any momentum the Sycamores would gain in the quarter, as she knocked down a three following a Sycamore three with 4:04 left in the period. CSUN led 54-47 with one period left in the game.

The Matadors would push the lead to 11 in the final period of play, but that didn't deter the blue and white. Trailing by 11 with 2:54 remaining, Echi put up four quick points and Elder converted a lay-in off of an inbounds steal to close the gap to 62-57 with 1:30 remaining.

CSUN converted a free throw during their next trip down the court, but Marie Hunter found Elder under the basket with a beautiful no-look pass overtop the defense to trail by four. Four was as close as the Sycamores would get however, as Northridge held on for the win, 67-59.

Northridge was led by Deja Williams who ended with 20 points as well as De'Jionae Calloway who posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

ISU is back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 3, when they return to the Hulman Center for the first time this season for a matchup with Marshall at 8 p.m. ET.
