TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State evened the season series at one-a-piece with Drake on Saturday, using strong offense to help take the victory over the Bulldogs, 3-1.
Nikkie White was the driving force behind the impressive Sycamore offense as the junior tallied a career-best 20 kills while hitting .318. Her previous career-high also came against the Bulldogs earlier this season when she ended the match with 16.
Also crossing the 10-kill threshold was
Madeline Williams and
Rhiannon Morozoff who earned 11 and 10 digs, respectively. The 10 kills by Morozoff was a season-best for the senior.
Mary Hannah Lewis and
Chloe Mason split the setting workload, and Lewis ended with a career-high 31 assists and Mason added 20 of her own. Drake was led by Paige Aspinwall who ended the night with 23.
As a team, the Trees hit .220 with 61 kills and 61 assists, their second-best assist output of the year, compared to Drake's 43 kills and .138 hitting. The Bulldogs only recorded 40 assists as a team.
Defensively, four Sycamores ended their Saturday with double-digit digs. Libero
Melina Tedrow led the way with 23, while freshman
Taylor Shelton chipped-in 16.
Jade York and
Gretchen Kuckkan earned 11 and 10 digs, respectively. ISU held an 86-75 edge in digs over Drake.
The blue and white were also impressive at the net, recording seven team blocks to the Bulldog's three. Williams and
Cassie Kawa were the leaders at the net, with Williams tallying six block assists and Kawa adding four.
ISU will be back in action next weekend when they hit the road and travel north for showdowns with Valparaiso and Loyola.
Set One - Indiana State 27, Drake 25
- White tallied six of her 20 kills in the frame.
- ISU hit .360 to Drake's .340, ending with 22 kills and just four errors.
- Leading the way in the set game was Lewis with 14.
- The Trees held the advantage in digs, 21-20.
Set Two - Indiana State 25, Drake 20
- Indiana State forced the Bulldogs to hit negative in the second frame at -.030 on eight kills and nine errors.
- The Sycamores had another impressive offense set with 13 kills, four errors and .321 hitting.
- Williams earned five of her six block assists in the second set.
Set Three - Drake 25, Indiana State19
- Drake managed to cool off the Sycamore offense, holding ISU to .157 hitting on 15 kills.
- Tedrow led the defensive effort with eight of the Trees' 30 digs in the frame.
- Lewis and Mason finished the set with seven and six assists, respectively.
Set Four - Indiana State 25, Drake
- Indiana State put the set away early, opening the frame on a 12-3 run and never looking back.
- Drake once again hit negative in the set at .025 while ISU hit .091.
- York's service game was crucial in the opening run as she placed the ball perfectly for two service aces.
- Similar to the third set, Tedrow added eight digs to her total in the final frame.
