Drake Scores Late To Top Indiana State

URBANDALE, Iowa – It was a defensive struggle for the Sycamores as they took on Drake at Urbandale High School in Sunday afternoon but it was the Bulldogs who scored late in order to take a 1-0 victory over the Sycamores in MVC action.

ISU fell to 3-9-2, 1-3-1 MVC while Drake improved to 6-8-1, 3-2-0 MVC.

Drake's Abby Stephenson scored in the 64th minute as both teams struggled to generate many offensive opportunities for all of the first half and early in the second. Stephenson found the lower right corner of the framework to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish.

The Bulldogs held a 20-6 edge in shots as well as a 6-3 margin in shots on goal. Six different Sycamores took a swing at goal including CeCe Wahlberg, Kate Face, Sidney Ewing, Jensen Margheim, Danielle Varner and Olivia Sharar.

Senior Hannah Sullivan recorded five saves in the match to drive her career total up to 175 which is fifth-best ever in the history of the program.

Ewing put a shot on goal in the fifth minute but it was saved at the top of the cross bar by the Bulldogs' goalkeeper. Ewing already owns two of the six fastest goals scored in Sycamore history and nearly added to that total.

Freshman Kate Face gave it a great look in the 25th minute as he would be goal hit off the cross bar and fell back into action. Varner's shot came in the opening moments of the second half and missed wide right while Sharar tried the left side of the framework in the 60th minute.

ISU's final two looks at goal came in the 76th minute when Margheim took aim at the high left corner of the goal to force a save and Wahlberg got intot he action in the 77th minute when her shot into the low center of the goal allowed for the third and final save of the match by Kelsie Stone.

Indiana State returns to action on Saturday, October 26 when they travel to Chicago to take on Loyola at 8 pm (ET). The match will be televised live nationally on ESPN+.
