Â
Series History – Valparaiso
- This will just be the ninth meeting between the two Indiana schools.
- Indiana State holds a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series and has won both meetings played at Valparaiso.
- Last season marked the first time the two teams met in league play and just the third and fourth times since the turn of the century.
- While only playing at Valparaiso twice, Indiana State has never lost on the road against the Crusaders.
Series History – Loyola Chicago
- This will be the 17th meeting between the two Indiana schools.
- Indiana State holds a 12-4 advantage in the all-time series and has won six straight in the series, last losing in 2015.
- Despite that dominance, the Sycamores are just 4-3 in games played in Chicago as the Windy City has not proven to be welcoming. However, ISU has won the last three meetings in Chicago.
- The series has had a wide variety of scores with the Trees winning with 101 points in 2006 while also winning with just 47 points in 2017.
Five Things to Know
- Road Warriors
As Indiana State hits the road this weekend, the Sycamores are tied for the Valley lead in road wins this season with five. Indiana State (5-4), Drake (5-2) and Bradley (5-1) all have reached five road wins this season.
- Success in Small Margins
Indiana State enters the weekend with a 5-1 mark this year in games decided by 10 or fewer points. That's as many close call victories as the Sycamores had last year and the best record in that category for the Trees since the 2014-15 season.
- MAC Reunion on Friday
The Indiana State at Valparaiso game on Friday marks a pair of first year head coaches squaring off against one another. Indiana State's Vicki Hall (formerly of Toledo) and Valparaiso's Mary Evans (formerly of Ohio) were both assistant/associate head coaches on the sidelines in the Mid-American Conference last year before heading to the Valley. The MAC regularly ranks in the top 10 in conference RPI.
- Windy City Not Always Welcoming
Indiana State has a 12-4 all-time record against Loyola but success in games played in Chicago has been tough to come by. The Sycamores are just 4-3 all-time in Chicago and that is only due to very recent success – the Trees have won the last three meetings at Gentile Arena.
- A Change in Free Throws Facing
The Sycamores have been fortunate this year thanks to opponent miscues. Entering this weekend's play, ISU opponents have shot just 60.4 percent at the free throw line, a mark that ranks as the sixth-lowest in the country. That will change abruptly Sunday when Indiana State faces a Loyola squad that ranks third in the nation – and first in the Valley – at the charity stripe. The Ramblers are shooting an impressive 79.0 percent from the free throw line this year.
