ST. MICHAEL, Barbados - Indiana State junior
Ayanna Morgan captured the Barbados national championship in the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday at National Stadium in St. Michael, Barbados.
Â
Her journey to the championship was no easy task as she had to go face-to-face with Kierre Beckles who competed in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2016 Rio Olympics for Barbados and holds the national record of 12.88. The two hurdlers were neck-and-neck for the entire race, but Morgan dipped at the finish line and won with a time of 13.77 which matches her personal-best time and the fifth-best time in ISU history.
Â
This victory caps off a phenomenal junior campaign for Morgan who climbed the Indiana State record books multiple times throughout the year. During the indoor season, the Barbados-native ran the fastest time in school history in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line at 8.39 at the EIU Friday Night Special. She then earned All-MVC honors at the MVC Indoor Championships by placing third in the pentathlon with a score of 3650, which is the fourth-best score in Sycamore history.
Â
Morgan used the success she found during the indoor season to put together a great outdoor season. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the outdoor season came at the Drake Relays, where she was a member of the school-record and Drake Relays Champion shuttle hurdle relay team. The relay team clocked an impressive time of 55.74, a record by nearly two seconds. In the 100-meter hurdles final at the MVC Outdoor Championships, the junior recorded a personal-best and the fifth-best time in school history of 13.77 en route to a fourth place finish.
