TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State student-athletes closed out the spring semester with a cumulative grade point average above a 3.0 for the 47th-consecutive semester as 62 percent of student-athletes earned a 3.0 or better.
"I am proud of the efforts of our coaches and student-athletes. We have a strong history of performing well in the classroom and we are striving to be even better," Director of Athletics
Sherard Clinkscales said. "The hard work of
Michelle Stodden and
Brooke Porter have elevated the level service to our teams. We have been intentional in empowering our student-athletes to leverage their academic and athletic success to earn internships and full-time employment opportunities."
As an athletic department, Indiana State has seen an overall increase in grade point average over the last academic year, improving from a 3.21 to a 3.29 cumulative GPA. As a whole, 33 student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPA's in the spring. Of 389 student-athletes, 151 (38%) earned Dean's List honors – 3.5 term GPA or above.
"I'm extremely proud of the efforts our athletes as well as our coaching staffs put in to in academics,"
Michelle Stodden, who leads the Academic Department in Athletics said. "You couldn't ask for more supportive coaches. Over the past academic year, the grade improvements that the teams have earned have been outstanding."
Women's golf led the department with a 3.71 cumulative GPA with women's soccer close behind with a 3.67 GPA. Women's swimming & diving also finished strong in the classroom with a 3.62 mark in the program's second season.
Men's track & field and cross country achieved the highest GPA of all men's programs with a 3.11 cumulative GPA while Sycamore baseball followed just behind at 3.09.
"Being surrounded by positive and supportive coaching staffs is what makes our jobs in the world of academic support for student-athletes worthwhile. Here at ISU, our coaches are bought into the success of student-athletes in the classroom, they're supportive of the initiatives we have in place as a unit, and all share a common goal – to see their student-athletes earn their degree," said
Brooke Porter. "Our student-athletes work tirelessly day in and day out to balance their life as a student and their life as an athlete, and it has shown in the improvement of our overall student-athlete GPA."
