Sycamores Stumble at Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS – Bella Peterson was hit her 11th double of the season but nine runners stranded on base along with a mental miscue caused Indiana State to stumble at Saint Louis Wednesday evening.

Indiana State (23-26) seemingly was impervious to all of the threatening situations Saint Louis (26-25) could throw at them as the Billikens were forced to strand runners in scoring position in four of the six innings before the final frame. The Sycamores had almost escaped for a fifth time before a mental miscue gave the Billikens a walk-off victory.

Facing runners at second and third with one out, Della Gher forced Saint Louis Allie MacFarlane to hit a weak ground ball back to the circle. Gher scooped up the ball and immediately threw to first for the force out but didn't notice the Billiken runner at third sprinting home for the winning run.

The seventh inning was extended after a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed SLU's Kat Lane to reach first safely and load the bases for the Billikens. A fielder's choice to second prevented the lead runner from scoring and secured the first out before MacFarlane drove in the winning run for Saint Louis.

Indiana State hosts Loyola in a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series at Price Field starting Saturday with a MVC Tournament spot on the line.
