INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana State baseball used a seven-run third inning to claim an 11-4 victory over Butler Tuesday night at Victory Field in Indianapolis. The win also marked the 13th-straight win for the Sycamores over the Bulldogs.
Indiana State (22-19) was led at the plate by junior
Clay Dungan, who tied a career high with five base hits to go along with three runs driven in.
Luke Fegen tallied three hits, including a double and two RBI.
Jarrod Watkins,
Dane Giesler and
CJ Huntley each went for a pair of hits for the Trees.
The Sycamores tied a season high with 17 base hits while Butler (27-13) was held to six. Indiana State stranded 13 runners on base while the Bulldogs left four on the base paths.
Donnie Ames (3-1) picked up his third win of the year after going three and two-third innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out two.
Geremy Guerrero made his third start of the season in the scheduled staff day, going two innings and giving up just a run while fanning a pair of Bulldogs.
Ethan Larrison entered in the sixth, getting the Sycamores out of a jam after Butler put their first two men on base. The right-hander earned his ninth save of the season after tossing the final three and a third innings. He did not allow a hit to the Bulldogs over the span and retired four on strikeouts.
Clay Dungan put the Sycamores on the board in the second with an RBI single to left field to score
Luke Fegen who reached on a two-out double earlier in the inning. The Bulldogs wasted no time answering the ISU run as Harrison Freed sent a ball to the deepest part of the ballpark with a solo home run to straight-away center in the home half of the second to tie the game at one.
The bats were red-hot for the Sycamores in the third as Indiana State batted around on eight base hits and a pair of walks to put up a season high seven runs in the inning, taking an 8-1 lead over the Bulldogs.
Three-straight singles from
Dane Giesler,
Jake Means and
Jarrod Watkins would load the bases for
Romero Harris, who played in his first game since March 20th at Eastern Illinois. Harris would lose his chance at a grand slam though as Giesler would scurry home on a wild pitch to give the Sycamores a 2-1 lead. Harris would draw a walk leading to a
Roberto Enriquez RBI single to right.
Luke Fegen went on to drive in two more runs with a single through the right side before Dungan and
CJ Huntley each drove in a run on back-to-back base hits.
Butler would capitalize on a one-out throwing error from
Donnie Ames to score two runs in the home half of the third to make it an 8-3 ISU advantage. Each team would add a run in the fourth inning. Enriquez would come around to score on a Dungan base hits after leading off the inning with a walk.
ISU tacked on a pair of runs in the ninth after Dungan tied his career high with his fifth base hit of the game on a double to right field. He would be driven in by
CJ Huntley a batter later.
Jake Means would make it an 11-4 game with a sacrifice fly to score Huntley.
Butler's Jack Meyers was charged with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in the third.
The Sycamores continue Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend with a trip to Southern Illinois to take on the Salukis.
