LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Indiana State baseball could not overcome No. 24 Louisville's offensive outbursts Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals clinched the series with a 10-6 victory at Patterson Stadium.
Indiana State (20-19) scored the first run of the game in the third inning when junior
CJ Huntley drove in
Clay Dungan from second with a single through the right side after Dungan doubled to right field with one out in the inning.
The Cardinals (29-13) answered back quickly with a four-run bottom half of the inning that began with a double to the gap in center off the bat of Ethan Stringer followed by a pair of walks to load the bases. Four runs would cross the plate next after Louisville went for three-straight base hits starting with a two-run single up the middle from Logan Wyatt followed by a double to center from Josh Stowers and a single to left from Danny Oriente.
The Sycamores would look to close the gap in the top of the fifth when Huntley collected his second hit of the day with a double to left field that would bring in
Max Wright to make it 4-2 in favor of Louisville.
A one-out walk and an infield single setup a three-run home run from Logan Wyatt in the bottom half of the fifth to extend the Cardinals lead to 7-2. UL went on to add three more insurance runs in the seventh which would be important as Indiana State scored four in the eighth.
Jarrod Watkins,
Dane Tofteland and
Roberto Enriquez reached consecutively with one out in the eighth to load the bases for
Luke Fegen who capitalized with an RBI single to left field.
Brandt Nowaskie picked up a pinch-hit single to no-mans-land in left-center to score a run and
Clay Dungan drove in two runs on a single to right before Louisville went to the bullpen.
Former Sycamore
Austin Conway, who grad transferred to Louisville this season would collect the final two outs of the eighth and go on to close out the ninth en route to his first save of the season.
Huntley led the way for the Trees with three base hits and a pair of RBIs while
Clay Dungan drove in two on a pair of hits.
Triston Polley fell to 5-2 on the season after going 4.1 innings in the start and allowing seven runs.
Tyler Whitbread allowed three runs in 3.2 innings of relief.
Nick Bennett earned the win for Louisville, moving to 5-1 on the year after a six-inning outing in which he allowed six hits and a pair of runs.
The Cards had four hitters with multiple hits led by Wyatt who had two hits, including a home run to go with five runs driven in.
Indiana State outhit Louisville, 11-10, but left nine runners on base. ISU also gave up eight walks to the Cardinals in the game.
The Sycamores can salvage a game in the series Sunday with a first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. from Patterson Stadium.
