EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Shaye Barton and
Kylie Stober were dangerous at the plate, Stober was impressive in the circle and
Rebecca Gibbs made a diving catch to clinch a win for the second time in a week as Indiana State dominated in a 6-1 win at Evansville Wednesday night.
Â
The win moves Indiana State to 23-22 overall and into sole possession of third place in Missouri Valley Conference play with a 10-10 league mark.
Â
Stober (7-8) drove in runs in the second and third innings off a fielder's choice and single, respectively, while also fanning five in four innings in the circle. She held Evansville scoreless and only allowed three hits and three walks in the win.
Arielle Blankenship (4) received the save after allowing only one run on five hits in three innings.
Â
Every inning Indiana State scored, Barton crossed the plate. Scoring in the second and third to help the Sycamores out to a 3-0 lead, Barton also scored in Indiana State's three-run seventh inning that fully put the game out of reach for Evansville (14-29, 7-13).
Â
And just like last weekend in the first game at Northern Iowa, when Indiana State's prospects were threatened
Rebecca Gibbs made a diving catch in left field for the final out of the game. Gibbs, who was 1-for-4 with a run scored at the plate, made the diving catch Wednesday night after the Purple Aces scored their only run of the game in the seventh inning and threatened with two more runners on base.
Â
Indiana State clinches the season series over the Purple Aces as the Sycamores have not lost a series to Evansville in five of the last six tries.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Shaye Barton gets the nod after going 2-for-3 at the plate while also being hit by a pitch. A junior, Barton scored each time she reached base and was locked in at the hot corner with four assists and several impressive plays.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
In the six innings Evansville left runners on base in the game, the Indiana State defense forced the Purple Aces to strand runners in scoring position in five of those six frames.
