Giesler Goes for His 10th Home Run as Sycamores Take Down Ball State, 10-6

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Indiana State baseball jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over Ball State Wednesday afternoon and never looked back as the Sycamores defeated the Cardinals, 10-6 in Muncie. Indiana State improved to 20-17 on the season while Ball State dropped to 19-20.

Dane Giesler connected on a two-run home run in the sixth inning to push the Indiana State lead to 9-1 as he continues to swing the bat well. He finished the game with a team-best three base hits and three RBIs. Giesler has now hit three home runs in the last two games after connecting on two home runs at Northern Illinois.

Jarrod Watkins, Clay Dungan and Jake Means each picked up two base hits each for the Sycamores. Watkins drove in two runs in the third on a bases-clearing triple to right-center.

The Sycamores jumped out to an early 6-0 lead through three innings of play, taking advantage of wild Ball State pitching. On the day, the Sycamores had the bases loaded twice with a majority of the baserunners reaching via base-on-balls as ISU drew nine total walks.

CJ Huntley and Luke Fegen each picked up two walks on the afternoon while Roberto Enriquez reached on a walk as well as his 20th hit-by-pitch of the season.

The Sycamores got strong pitching from redshirt senior Weston Rivers for the third-straight outing. The southpaw went five complete innings, allowing just one hit and an unearned run while striking out two Cardinals to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Ball State made things interesting late, scoring four runs in the final two innings and loading the bases in the ninth, but the Sycamores would make the plays to stymie the Cardinal run, including a 4-6-3 double play to end the eighth.

Evan Marquarat was charged with the loss for Ball State to fall to 1-2 on the season. The right-hander allowed three earned runs in two innings.

Each team went for 11 base hits on the day and the Sycamores stranded 11 baserunners while Ball State left seven on base.

Indiana State makes the trek the Louisville for a non-conference weekend series with the Cardinals. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET Friday.
