WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana State scored three first-inning runs and withstood a Purdue rally that included a bases loaded, one out situation in the sixth as the Sycamores held on for a 3-2 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader Wednesday.
The Sycamores (18-18) notched the program's first win over the Boilermakers since 1999 and their first win over a Big Ten team since 2016. For head coach
Mike Perniciaro, it was his first win as a head coach over Purdue (11-29).
Brooke Mann was 1-for-3 and drove in two runs for Indiana State with her two-run home run in the first. That pushed Mann up to 10 career home runs at ISU, tying her for seventh all-time in school history (Sam Markowski (2006-09).
Della Gher (6) broke her single season saves record (previously five) as she held the Boilermakers hitless in 1 2/3 innings in the circle. Facing two on and one out in the sixth, she walked a batter to load the bases then proceeded to retire the next four to clinch the save.
Abbey Kruzel (3-5) was credited with the win after allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two in 4 1/3 innings pitched in her longest start since March 9.
Amanda Guercio was 2-for-4 with the other RBI for Indiana State and finished the doubleheader an impressive 3-for-7 with 4 RBIs and two runs scored.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Della Gher was absolutely clutch, inheriting two runners on base in a tense situation in the sixth. After walking a batter (she is now forgiven), Gher proceeded to retire the final four batters of the game to clinch her sixth save of the year, setting a new single season record at Indiana State.
STAT OF THE GAME
Indiana State not only recorded its first win over Purdue since 1999 but also did so while recording fewer hits than the Boilermakers. The last time ISU won a game with fewer hits was the March 30 win at Illinois State.
