TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State baseball fell to in-state foe Indiana, 6-1 at Bart Kaufman Field Tuesday evening in Bloomington. The No. 10 Hoosiers broke a tie game in the sixth inning, scoring five runs in the final three innings of play.
Indiana (23-6) outhit the Sycamores 9-4 in the ballgame led by Justin Walker and Matt Gorski with two hits apiece. Walker drove in the go-ahead runs in the sixth with a two-run double to left.
The Sycamores (16-11) looked to break into the scoring column from the start after
Clay Dungan reached after being hit to leadoff the game and moved to second after a walk, but IU would get out of the inning unscathed.
ISU fell behind early as Indiana capitalized on a one-out single from Matt Lloyd in the bottom of the first. Lloyd moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball before scoring on a single off the bat of Ryan Fineman.
After a shaky start, Sycamore starting pitcher
Weston Rivers settled in during the scheduled staff start. It marked the first game action for the redshirt senior this season as he returned from injury. The knuckleballer threw two and a third innings, striking out one and giving up just one run.
Dalton Laney (0-2) was strong in his relief work, striking out three and allowing no hits in three innings. He would however be charged with the loss after his lone walk in the outing came around to score in the sixth.
Junior
Hayden Jaco knocked in the tying run in the fifth inning on an RBI single to center to score
Dane Tofteland from second. It was his second RBI of the season on his second hit. The game also marked the first career start for the Coquitlam, B.C. native behind the plate as he finished 2-for-3.
CJ Huntley led off the sixth with a hustle double when he singled to the gap in right -- one of his two base hits in the game. The Sycamores would bunt him to third, but a fly out and a groundout ended the scoring threat.
IU answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, a run in the seven and a two-out, two-run single in the eighth to secure their 12th win in their last 13 games.
Tim Herrin went five innings allowing just a run and two hits while striking out four. Tommy Sommer would be credited with the win to pick up his first victory of the season while BJ Sabol earned the save after three quality innings on the mound.
The Sycamores return to Bob Warn Field this weekend as they welcome Illinois State for a three-game series.
