CHARLESTON, Ill. - Indiana State baseball picked up its seventh-straight victory with a 10-8 win at Eastern Illinois Tuesday afternoon at Coaches Stadium in Charleston. It marks the longest winning-streak for the Sycamores since the 2014 season.
In typical midweek fashion, runs were scored fast and in bunches as both teams utilized their bullpens in the staff outing. The Sycamores (12-5) jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Panthers put up a six-spot in the fourth inning of play.
Tyler Whitbread picked up his first win of the season to improve to 1-1 while matching a career high with six strikeouts in three innings.
Tyler Grauer struck out three batters in an inning and a third while
Donnie Ames retired two via the punch-out in an inning and a third.
Right-hander
Ethan Larrison recorded his sixth save of the year after closing out the final two and two-thirds of the contest. Larrison entered with a runner on first and one out in the seventh. He finished with four strikeouts and allowed just one hit.
Jake Means collected his third home run of the season in the second inning on a two-run blast to left field. To make it 3-0.
Luke Fegen drove in one of his three RBIs to cap of the second inning on a single to center. Fegen finished with a team-high four hits and three RBIs.
Four Sycamores recorded multiple hits on the day to go along with Fegen including
Dane Giesler,
Clay Dungan and
Jarrod Watkins who recorded two hits each.
Fegen would make it 6-0 in favor of the Sycamores in the fourth on a two-run double to center before
Romero Harris smoked a ball off the wall in center for a double to push ISU's lead to 8-0.
Following multiple home runs in the fourth by Eastern,
Max Wright stepped to the plate in the seventh to pad the ISU lead and he did just that with an RBI single over the glove of the first baseman. The rest was academic.
Josh Turnock led Eastern Illinois (8-11) with a 2-for-5 day including four RBIs. Jake Haberer was charged with the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year.
Indiana State outhit the Panthers 13-10 in the game, but stranded 11 runners on base.
The Sycamores will open an eight-game homestand this weekend with Xavier coming to town. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET from Bob Warn Field.
