Sycamores Struggle in Series Opener Against Austin Peay, Fall 15-8

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Indiana State walked eight batters, hit three and committed five fielding errors in a series opening 15-8 loss to Austin Peay Friday afternoon at Raymond C. Hand Park.

The Sycamores (5-4) scored two runs in the first inning and retired the first three batters in the APSU order, but the Governors (7-2) scored seven runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back. Austin Peay would add runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings en route to the victory.

Indiana State made things interesting in the ninth, scoring five runs on APSU's Ethan Clark in his collegiate debut before the Govs went to the bullpen for another reliever to close out the contest. The Sycamores recorded four doubles in the inning along with two walks before the home team would make the pitching change.

The Sycamores finished with 10 hits in the game, but would be held hitless from the second to the sixth inning while the Govs jumped on Sycamore starter Tristan Weaver.

The ISU lefty would be ran from the game in the fourth inning after allowing six hits, four walks, a pair of hit batsmen and nine runs in three innings of work. Weaver (1-1) faced 21 APSU batters and finished with two strikeouts in the outing.

Uncharacteristic sloppy defense played a part in the game as well as ISU committed five fielding errors, resulting in six unearned runs.

Jarrod Watkins was the lone Sycamore to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk. Coming into the weekend, ISU had recorded seven doubles in eight games. Six Sycamores collected doubles in the game.

Three Sycamores pitched out of the bullpen to open the series. Donnie Ames went an inning and struck out two while Dalton Laney went and inning and two-third, giving up one hit and four unearned runs. Geremy Guerrero finished out the game for the Trees, going two and a third innings and giving up a pair of hits as well as two unearned runs.

Indiana State will return to Raymond C. Hand Park Saturday with a scheduled 2 p.m. ET first pitch. Southpaw Triston Polley will toe the rubber for his third start of the season.
